Night Driving
When I realized that I need glasses for seeing distances it was only after I realized that I couldn't read the street signs correctly. When following directions for how to get to someone's house, I found that I had incredible difficulty trying to read the street signs that would tell me where to go. Because of this, I wound up getting lost. At first, I thought the problem wasn't a huge deal. After all, there are many people who have difficulty seeing where they are going at night. This wasn't...
Driving in the Dark
What can't be said about driving in the dark? It's inherently more dangerous than driving during the day because there is less light to illuminate our pathways. Years and years ago, people didn't bother going out at night because they didn't have cars. They had horses and buggies and kerosene lamps: hardly the equipment that you'd want for a midnight run to the coffee shop! Nowadays, however, and with the invention and progression of technology, we live in a much more mobile society. Living in...
Driving in the Dark is Dangerous
Driving in the dark is dangerous for a number of reasons, which is why you have to be especially careful. For one thing, when you drive at night or when it is dark out, it is more difficult to see things versus when you are driving during the daytime. There are all sorts of animals and other creatures that are nocturnal and come out at night time. Also, depending on the area that you live in, you may have to deal with more types of animals haphazardly crossing the road in front of your car. For...
When Older People Drive
As you become older, there are things that you need to be more cognizant of, and one of those things is how you are driving. I am almost ashamed to admit it, but one time while visiting my now 78 year-old grandmother, she was driving my boyfriend and I to visit my uncle a few blocks away from her apartment in Charlotte, North Carolina. The drive probably only took somewhere between five to ten minutes, but those were the longest five to ten minutes of our life.
I am typically not a nervous...
The Concern About Older Drivers
Recently, I just got back from a trip to Charlotte to visit with my grandmother who is now 78 years old. For 78 years of age, she is still extremely independent and sharp as a tack. She has her own car, drives herself around, runs her errands and meets up with friends for lunch, etc. However, what I have noticed is that my grandmother does not do well with driving at night.
As you get older, it appears that we tend to trust ourselves less and less where better judgment is concerned. Nowhere is...
Keeping Your Teen From Accidents
Your teenager just got their license and they are very excited to get behind the wheel. It is your responsibility to make sure that they have the right attitude and maturity before allowing them to do that. They're going to be in control of over a ton moving metal and you need to make sure that they are responsible.
Drum it into their heads that they always need to wear their safety belt. The moment they get into the driver's seat, they need to put their belt on. No ifs, ands, or buts....
Road Trip Hazards
The other day, I was driving along the highway when I saw the cars ahead of me swerving at the last minute into the other lane. I couldn't help but wonder what was in the lane that was preventing these cars from staying on track. When I got closer, I realized that it was a giant tire that must have come off of a tractor trailer.
The above is just one example of road hazards that you need to look out for. Road hazards can range in size, shape and item and be anything from an abandoned tennis...
Using Your Lights
Whenever I drive on the roadways at night in North Carolina, I always seem to come across people who have accidentally (or at least I'd like to think that this was the case) left their high beam lights on. Of course, as luck would have it, these people are almost always right behind my vehicle. Not only this, but they are typically tailgating me as well, which only makes it worse.
High beam lights are lights that are located on the front end of your vehicle beside your regular driving...
Driving While Intoxicated Isn t Smart
Driving while intoxicated isn't something that should even have to be discussed with as much fervor as it is. Apparently, there are still millions of people out there who feel that they are sober enough to sit behind the driver's seat of a vehicle and drive home. However, what many of these people fail to realize is that regardless of whether or not they are driving a couple of blocks or a couple of miles, driving while intoxicated is incredibly dangerous, and it doesn't take that long to...
Your Vision and Your Driving
About four years ago, when I was still in college, I started to notice that I would occasionally have difficulty driving at night. The problem only crept up every now and again whenever I was following directions or navigating my way to a place that I hadn't previously been before. Then, when the fall semester started for graduate school, I noticed that I was having difficulty seeing the blackboard. I wasn't sitting terribly far away from it either, so at first I thought that perhaps it was the...
