Make a Seating Area For Your Kitchen

The kitchen is an integral room in every house. Not only is it used for all food preparation duties but it is also quite often used for entertaining purposes. It is for this purpose that a kitchen can be overlooked and with the addition of a seating area, it can add a new functional dimension to the room. If there are lots of visitors in the house then it will help to separate off those who wish to have a conversation from those who are preparing the meal. A seating area in a kitchen also makes for a good place to sit with a coffee, catch up on some television of just sit and work at the kitchen. It's easy to forget how useful the kitchen can be as a home office space. So how do you go about creating a pleasant seating area that people will want to use?

If you have friends who have a kitchen arrangement similar to the one you wish to achieve then why not ask if you can take a few photos of their kitchen as reference material. Alternatively, flick through a few designer magazines and cut out ideas that you see and keep them in an ideas scrapbook. Another good tip is to sketch out some formal and informal ideas so that you can compare the two. If you are not so artistically inclined then you can always just make notes about various furniture styles, colours and layouts that you think could work well in your kitchen. If you have a window near your seating area then don't neglect the impact that this can have on the arrangement. It may be worth looking into various window treatments, curtains or perhaps even flowers if you are fortunate enough to have a flower box outside.

If you have enough space you may find that a fire place can be a very homely addition, particularly if you can install a wood burning fireplace. It can make a very welcoming centre piece to your kitchen, especially during the cold winter months.

Tempting though it may be to treat yourself to an entire new set of kitchen furniture, it can be easy to overfurnish room. It is important that your seating area is kept neat and attractive so that it doesn't detract from the food preparation area. The last thing you want is for one half of your kitchen to be neat and tidy and for the other end to be cluttered with chairs and tables.

If you are investing in new furniture then try to choose family friendly items as you never know who might end up comig to visit. Also it can be nice to hang up some artwork that has been in your family for some time, or some other artwork that will be a pleasant focal point or conversation starter. The room should be for social purposes so you don't want to make it seem too formal.

Finally, pick out some suitable colours and fabrics that you think will help to make the seating area more enjoyable and pleasant to use. Dark colours will obviously provide a more masculine touch, however these can be balanced out with lighter colours and some more feminine accessories.
