ICANN Helps Defend VeriSign Network Solutions Monopoly ICANN creates the process for new gTLDs. In other words, if you want to manage your own TLD, what comes after the dot, like com, net, org, etc., it is not like registering a domain name where if you get the idea first, you can register it.
Lets say you wanted to register and own .CPA and sell domain names on that TLD, you could submit your application to ICANN first, then ICANN can still decide to give it to someone else, even though it was your idea.
The new gTLD FAQ. See item 5 in the FAQ....
Domain Parking Vs Domain Development The "Should I park my domain name and monetize it that way or should I develop a website?" is a pretty old debate among domainers. And I believe its proof that laziness will always win over sensibility.
There are a variety of ways to monetize a domain name. Most domainers who deal with a lot of domain names like to park their domains at Sedo, GoDaddy, or other services that help them monetize the name.
Others build made-for-adsense websites that have little real value, intending to get...
Why Do You Have Just One Website? This is a question I get to ask a lot of clients. Let me give you a different take on the Internet and Internet Marketing than you may have heard before.
Many, many years ago in a galaxy far, far away, if you wanted to advertise your business, there was only print media, basically newspapers and bulletins.
Then Radio came along and at first advertisers stuck to print media rather than advertise on that newfangled radio. Soon they began to see the value of advertising on radio and all was...
Google Optimization and Social Bookmarking Google Optimization and Search Engine Optimization
There is SEO or search engine optimization and there is Google Optimization. There is a big difference between the two. Matt Cutts is a really smart guy and a lot of people read his blog. When interviewed the stories have titles like "Matt Cutts on SEO". But in reality, he works for Google and the story should read "Matt Cutts on Google Optimization".
We all know that more searches are performed at Google than any other search engine or...
SEO Expectations and Guarantees I have clients that call and ask me to develop an SEO strategy for them. Many times they ask certain questions that I thought it would be nice to answer by writing an article.
1. Can you guarantee me a front page Google listing? No. And neither can anyone else no matter what they say in their ads. They see these ads all over the web that promise top listings in Google in just 30 days and such. Any company who makes this claim is a scam.
Yes I said scam. If someone who owns an SEO company and...
Domain TLD and Trademark Myths I started buying and selling domain names in 1995. Domain speculation began sometime in 1994. I did appraisals and was one of the biggest advocates for registering generic domain names rather than made-up names or those that violated trademarks.
I made a good income from my domains because I did not just sell domain names, I sold domain names that had a business plan and a website while others were just trying to sell their domain names with no traffic, no business plan and no website.
Today...
Buying A Website Thats Easy To Manage? Buying a website is about more than considering the graphic design skills, and technical skills of the web design company. In today's fast paced online economy, website owners need an easy to manage website where there are NO HTML SKILLS needed for making changes.
Did you know that a recent survey revealed that 2/3s of people would be unlikely to trade with a company that did not have a website?
A website makes a company appear professional, whilst for many; this is a major tool for...
Do You Have A Google Habit? I visit a lot of webmaster forums and visit blogs about SEO as well as write some blogs of my own about SEO, Article Marketing, and Blogging. I learn a lot by visiting other people's blogs and forums and learn a lot by sharing that information with others.
But one thing bothers me about what I read on most forums and blogs. People are obsessed with Google. There are forums where they refer to Google as just "g" because they seem to be afraid someone at Google might read their post and not...

Company Blogs Of the top 500 companies in the USA only 40 have a company blog. The reasons for this are not yet clear, however some speculate that marketing agencies do not have enough domain specific knowledge to truly comprehend the value of a company blog from a PR, branding and direct sales perspective.
According to Bill Gates a company blog provides opportunities for companies to establish opinion and thought, whilst creating a human face to an organization.
Speaking with a blog consultant may help...
What Does Seo Mean? Every new webmaster will eventually run into the term SEO (Search Engine Optimization or Search Engine Optimizer) when he or she is working on marketing a website. This term can be generic and decisive all in one study.
The term came around at about the same time as the Search Engines started to take hold. Infoseek was one of the first broadly used search engines and the SEO crowd quickly grasped onto designing the sites with SEO as the main intent. The first technique was to simply stuff...
What Is Page Rank And Why Do We Want It? Everyone seems to be scrambling around trying to get links on websites with a high google page rank. I see lists of people posting on freelance websites, "I need 100 inbound links with PR5 or higher!", "Inbound Links needed from PR3 and above websites", etc. etc.
I get emails from webmasters all the time wanting to trade links with me because I have a higher pages rank than they do. I have to use all sorts of filtering methods in the Webmaster Forums I manage to keep the spammers from posting...

ICANN Violating Free Enterprise? Message to ICANN: Let those who want to create a TLD, simply register it with ICANN.
If the TLD is not already taken, if they have the technical capability to mange the TLD, and they have the desire to market domain names on that TLD, then let them do so.
It should be similar to the registering of a domain name, except on a higher level, with the added technical requirements. ICANN should be sort of an upper-registry for TLDs.
It would be ludicrous for a domain name registrar like GoDaddy...
Questioning Parked Domains And Google Adnonsense Is contextual advertising helping or hurting the web? It basically started with Google Adsense even though the concept wasnt new. It had never been done on the scale that Google did it. Now we have Yahoo Publisher. MSN is building their version. We have Konterra and a whole lot of other companies scrambling to cash in on the contextual ad craze.
Initially contextual advertising seems like a good idea. Ads based on the content of your website that might benefit your readers or visitors. Ads...
What Does A Blogging Consultant Look Like? You know, normally you can find a definition of a word or phrase by typing define: your phrase here into google and come up with a lot of results. Currently there are millions of blogs and there are hundreds of people who call themselves Blog or Blogging Consultants, yet when you type define: Blogging Consultant or Blogging Consultant into google you get no definition.
That is probably a good thing for most blogging consultants because without a definition, there is no standard to hold...
