•What Color Are Your Sunglasses? ? Filters are like sunglasses. We have them on all the time. We change their color as easily as we change our mood or our thoughts.
What I mean by 'filter' is that it is part of our process of perception. That is, how we view our life and everything happening within it.
Do you have a cup of coffee beside you as you read this? What is the color of the cup? (visual) Is there enough coffee in the cup that you can still smell it? (scent) Did you put sugar in to sweeten the taste? (taste) What...
•How Do You Calm The Monster In Your Mind? ? Do you really know what is going on in your mind?
When I started to notice what was going on in mine, I was appalled and dismayed. I felt that most of the time, I had a repetitive, belligerent child on my hands. Or I should say in my head.
How did I create this and more importantly - how do I manage it? I was realistic enough to know that 'control' of this mind was out of the question.
And I had another big problem. Now that I was aware of this 'monster upstairs,' there was no turning...
•Heavy Metal Music as Sound Therapy? ? Whenever I present to groups about sound therapy or talk with people at trade fairs, I often get expressions of concern and questions about heavy metal music. These are valid concerns, so I decided to take a closer look. My closer look has provided some interesting insight.
Heavy metal music has been a personal journey for our family. Our son, Matt, is lead guitar in a heavy metal band. It is his favorite music. He is a fabulously talented guitarist. Matt is also an early indigo child and...
•When You Don't Know How You Know Sometimes you just know something and don't know how you know. We all have gut feelings and intuitive nudges. Each of us has our own special relationship with our gut feelings and our intuition. And that relationship centers on trust.
How do you learn to trust something like intuition? And what does that have to do with sound therapy or healing sound?
Working with sound therapy or healing sound expands consciousness. Intuition is enhanced. We all have doubts and when our right brain barges...
•Tuning Forks My interest in tuning forks was sparked a few years ago by an experience with the Ohm forks from the Acutonics system. It was amazing to experience the beautiful low frequencies of those forks zip through my body. I was already familiar with the wonderful sensations in the body from holding and playing my Tibetan singing bowl. The tuning fork is much more specific than a bowl. It is like comparing a laser beam to a shower. They both feel amazingly wonderful, but they have different purposes....
•Favorite Sounds Like the song, "My Favorite Things," we can each easily make a list of our favorite things. Some of mine are my guitar, my singing bowl, my little water fountain in the living room.
Most people can easily make a list of their favorite foods. Does chocolate get you salivating? Spaghetti? Popcorn? Brussels sprouts? (Just kidding)
And what about scents? One of my favorites is rose. Since graduating from university, I have planted roses around every house I have lived in. Many people love the...
•The Neighborhood Whiner One of our neighbors has a crow's nest in her yard and we often wake up in the morning to a symphony of cawing. A few years ago, we noticed that one of the year's hatchlings had a rather unique voice. Instead of the clear, energetic "caw" of the regular crow, this one had a sound more like an "awww" with a pronounced nasal resonance. Like it had a bad head cold. My family immediately nicknamed this crow "the whiner" because that's really what it sounded like compared to the other crows....
•Backyard Vibrations One of the things I really like to do on a beautiful day, is to have my lunch outside on our deck. While I enjoy my lunch, it's wonderful to listen to the birds chirp and watch them splash around in the birdbath, listen to the little waterfall in the garden, enjoy the buzzing of the bees and watch the flowers grow. To me, this idyllic scene is filled with good vibrations. It's a great way to add some relaxing moments to the middle of my day.
There is one problem with this wonderful scene. The...
•The "Why" Generation I have two sons who are full-fledged members of what is being called the "Y" Generation. Another name for them is "Indigo Children." For the past 20 to 25 years I have also attracted many of these young people as classical guitar students. They have been among my greatest teachers.
I like to nickname them the "why" generation. That question appeared incessantly as our children grew up. When our younger son was five, before he would go to sleep every night, he had to ask two "why" questions....
•The Thunder of Leaves They say in Calgary that if you don't like the weather out your front door, look out your back door. Well, it was one of those dynamic fall days.
I was standing on my front porch, absorbing the golden beauty of the aspen trees around our house and enjoying the cool fall air. The sky from my front door had a mix of cumulus clouds and a bit of blue. But a closer look at the clouds showed how quickly they were moving. I didn't know that the weather service had predicted gusts of up to 100...
•A Bad Day A story appeared in our local newspaper recently about a man facing charges in court for the deaths of 5 people in a car accident. In his defense, he blamed the accident on a bad day. We have all had bad days and this poor soul had one of the worst days anyone could possibly imagine.
Every one of us knows what a bad day feels like. And we also know how easily a bad day can become worse. Have you ever heard this story or told it? "You wouldn't believe what happened today. My alarm clock didn't...
•Silence is NOT Golden When You Are Ill It's winter in Calgary. Flu and cold season has kicked in. We have already had a month where the daily temperature has struggled to reach -20 Celsius. When you're outside it hurts to take a deep breath. Our exposure to fresh air is limited. We spend the majority of our time indoors breathing recycled indoor air.
It is also a time of highly stressed immune systems for many people. The good news is that music and sound can boost your immune system. Many of us intuitively put on our favorite...
•Buffalo Rubbing Stone and Wisdom Buffalo rubbing stones are one of the interesting natural phenomena around Calgary. During the last ice age this entire area was covered with glaciers. As these glaciers receded, they dragged with them large boulders and rocks. When a rock became too heavy to for the glacier to drag, it found a new home. Some of these rocks were carried for hundreds of miles and some were the size of a car or truck.
Later, when herds of buffalo roamed through this area, they loved to rub along these rocks,...
•Calming the Freight Train in the Mind Do you find it difficult to meditate? Meditation is often defined as quieting or calming the mind. There are many ways to do this. And that is good news.
An effective way of calming the mind is to create a very strong focus on one thing. Singing bowls are a successful tool for creating this focus. Their sound has such a powerful presence that it is difficult not to focus the mind, especially when you are playing one. It is a wonderful way to create a meditative state with minimum effort. And...

Developing a meditation practice can lower blood pressure, boost the immune system, calm the emotions and mind and connect you deeply with your inner essence or spirit. And there are many, many ways to meditate. In this article you are offered the opportunity to meditate with sound, or more specifically, the silence between the sounds.
