Repairing Chips In Your Car Window

Clean and bright car window is what people commonly want for their vehicles. But some vehicle owners doesn't know that tiny chips are already existing on their car window that may risk life of the occupants and could be a big problem.

As you drive down the road, a small piece of gravel can hit your window and leave a chip. Even if your window is the most expensive car window in the world, it is still chip-receptive. Leaving the chip alone can cause breakage and may lead to a full window replacement instead of just having it repaired.

To save money, you can pick up a window chip repair kit at most retailers and fill the window chip before it gets to that point.

1. Clean out the hole of the window chip with a pin. Dig out any dirt as a clean hole will fill and adhere better than a dirty one. Clean the area of the glass using a dry cloth to remove dust and dirt.

2. Gently separate the paper support on the adhesive strip that came with the window repair kit. Place the sticky side on the glass so the window chip is in the exact center of the adhesive strip. Press firmly to ensure that it is stuck to the glass.

3. Peel off the paper backing on the other side of the adhesive strip now stuck to your windshield. Mount the pedestal provided in your kit so it is straight on the adhesive strip and the pedestal is facing straight up. Push on the base of the pedestal to make sure that it will stick to the adhesive strip.

4. Remove the plunger of the syringe and put the window chip-filling chemicals. Carefully replace the syringe plunger. Remove the cap of the syringe and you're ready to start filling the hole.

5. Insert the end of the syringe into the pedestal sticking out of the window chip. In inserting the chemicals in to the hole, cautiously press down the plunger. Pull up the plunger so the syringe fills with air. Press the plunger back down to add more chemicals to the hole. Let it sit for 10 minutes.

6. Remove the syringe, pedestal and adhesive backing from the window. Use the razor blade to smooth out the surface of the glass to make the newly filled hole the same level as the rest of the glass.

It is always best to take care of chips as soon as you become aware of them as a small chip that is ignored and left un-repaired can escalate into expensive situations where you could need to replace your entire window. Not only that, small chips can be easily repaired by professionals but also in most cases a good window repair job looks just like new.
