To determine the apps that you need, LG has included its "LG Application Advisor," itself an app that queries the universe of Android apps available and pulls down the ones you need for your tasks. The LG P500 is a quad-band phone, operating on the 800, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz frequency bands, using GSM technology. This makes the P500 Optimus One compatible with AT&T and T-mobile networks. It will not work with CDMA devices such as those offered by Sprint or Verizon, although its advertising does indicate it might work with "WCDMA/Edge" devices and GPRS in the 900 and 2100 MHz bands. Testing has shown that this may not always be the case. The P500 Optimus operates recognizes the 802.11 b/g standards so it is compatible with WiFi hotspots that are located across the country. What the P500 Optimus offers is a high-resolution 2048 by 1536 4.5-inch display the features IPS-style (Independent Panel Sliding) so that you can use it in vertical or horizontal positions. Its touchscreen, when combined with the right app, offers predictive typing so that it anticipates any words you may be typing for emails or texts. The touchscreen-based keyboard is too small for standard touch-typing, so you will have to make do with thumb-tying or two-finger typing with your index fingers. The P500 also offers Voice Recognition technology where you only have to speak, once the system is trained to your voice, the name or item you are searching for and Google's search engine takes over and the search is launched. The P500 Optimus is optimized for Google's technology as it uses the same base operating system. It not only offers highly integrated access to social networking sites such as YouTube and Google+, but also such features as Google mail (Gmail) and Google Talk (Gtalk) for Immediate Messaging. The P500 also offers built-in GPS functionality that integrates with GPS Navigator and A-GPS so you can use it as a navigation and routing device through its close integration with Google Earth and Google maps. You can also customize this display to map view, traffic view or satellite view. The P500 Optimus features a 3.15 MP autofocus camera that offers instant photography that offers geotagging so you can identify the site where an image was taken. It also operates as a video recorder, enabling you to take HD-style videography and upload it to the Internet. You can also use the video as the basis of a search since it is often easier to seek a site through videography than it is trying to find it through word filtering. Indeed, with Google's wide library of earth and specific site images it is likely that the video search will be quicker than a word search as it will zero in on exactly the spot one is seeking. Be aware, though, that photography may not seem instant which can be explained by the fact that the P500 operates with a 600 MHz processor while other smartphones operate at twice that speed. One can compensate for slower processor speeds by installing the maximum amount of memory the P500 Optimus can hold, 32 GB. Since it recognizes standard microSD memory, you are not locked into anyone's specific brand memory stick, as you are on some phones. Power is supplied by a lithium-ion battery that is capable of up to eight hours of talk time and 550 hours of standby. All of this is built into a package that measures 4.5 inches by 2.3 inches by 0.5 inches and weighs only 4.5 inches. Sound reproduction, by the way, is good and it is compatible and makes extensive use of Bluetooth technology so you can sync any Bluetooth-compatible devices such as phones or headsets with your Optimus. And, since it is Internet-capable you can upload and download any apps from your own home network or via a local hotspot. All in all the P500 Optimus is worth the investment for someone seeking an lower-cost alternative to Apple's iPhone.
