With gas prices going up and up, there seems to be no relief. With high prices at the pump and few dollars in wallets, it's getting harder to get places. The question often arises - how can I get the best gas mileage?

There are some ways that you can stretch your dollar when it comes to transportation. It is helpful to keep in mind the following suggestions.

1. Car Size

In general, a smaller car gets better mileage. This is because it is much easier for a small car to move forward (or backward) than a large car. Some of the big cars that generally have worse gas mileage are sports utility vehicles (SUVs), vans, and trucks. These vehicles often get less than 20 mpg (miles per gallon). Sedans and other small cars usually get somewhere between 20 - 40 mpg. However, there are some exceptions to this rule. Hybrid SUVs are available, and these get much better mileage than non-hybrid SUVs. They sometimes even have better mileage than sedans and compact cars. Also, sports cars are smaller than vans, SUVs, and trucks but they often get less than 20 mpg on average.

2. Car Makes

Certain car makers focus on efficient gas mileage more than others. When looking for a car or larger vehicle, browse the mpg of different makes before making your decision. It is a good idea to search items such as "best mpg cars" or a similar phrase to find comparisons.

3. Acceleration

When accelerating from a stop, you should push down on the gas pedal softly and gradually in order to get the best mileage. Pushing hard on the gas pedal means that you are using more gas, which means that you are getting fewer miles per gallon. If you accelerate slowly you will thus use less gas. If anyone tails you because of this, move over a lane if possible, remembering the money that you are saving.

4. Driving Style

If you drive like a racer, tail other cars, and generally weave in and out of lanes, you probably use more gas than necessary. This is because, as discussed above, accelerating uses more gas. If you drive recklessly, you are likely accelerating and braking quickly, as you may end up behind slower cars. This severely reduces your car's mileage. Keeping a good distance behind the car in front of you and only accelerating when necessary can increase your car's mileage.

5. Car Storage

One of the least known facts about mileage is that keeping things in your car can make it less efficient in terms of gas. The more weight in your car, the more gas it uses. While storing items is sometimes necessary, sometimes people carry unnecessary items around in their car trunks for extended periods of time. This can reduce long-term mileage. To fix this problem, you can look at the things stored in your car and remove any that are not necessary for emergency situations.

Following these suggestions should help improve gas mileage. Even if you are not looking for a new car, you can still reduce the amount that you pay at the gas station.
