What We Can Learn from the Classics

What’s your favorite romantic movie or, as some refer to: “chick flicks”? Everyone has a movie that they’ve seen so many times, they know the lines and those pivotal moments in the film where the good guy wins and the bad guy is forced to drop his head and admit defeat. Romance has not changed much through the decades, which makes sense. Humans, while we’re more educated and far more advanced with technology than those in the 1940s, 1950s and even the 1980s, we’re still chasing that ultimate goal of finding that one person who makes the bad days worth it and who can find faith in us when we can’t even see it in ourselves.

Before you decide the best romantic movie is one of the contemporary films we’ve all seen a hundred times, take a trip to the past for some real insight. Don’t assume a classic black and white can’t possibly speak to our modern hearts. In fact, despite the belief that controversial topics have only recently become part of major motion pictures, you might be surprised to discover Hollywood was building them into those well known and even not so well known films of yesteryear. And believe it or not, they were quite realistic, even if people were less apt to admit it. If they were realistic then, you can be sure they’re realistic now. Here are some of the best of the best that have those elements of human nature – good and bad:

Marty (1955) – This is the perfect example of how we’ve not come quite as far as we’d like to believe. This film reined supreme and owned the Academy Awards in 1955. It deals with those basic human needs of finding love and being accepted for who we are. Ernest Borgnine plays a sweet and kind thirty-something who has yet to find a wife and who feels the pressures of expectations of others. All of his siblings have gone on to marry and start their new lives while Marty lives at home with his widowed mother. Look for themes that deal with our desires to sometimes become reclusive, dealing with friends who think our choices in partners are not so attractive, rejection, renewal, weight issues and the innocence of what is likely the first love for both Marty and his new sweetheart.
People Will Talk (1951) – This is one of Cary Grant’s finest moments, despite many who disagree. Dr. Praetorius (Grant) serves as a reminder of what compassion looks like. It touches on pregnancy out of wedlock, suicide, the death penalty and forgiveness. It’s considered a comedic romance movie, but the elements of drama keep the film focused on what the film’s true story is about. Throughout the film, you may wonder, “How can there ever be a suitable ending?” There is. And it’s worth the wait.
Of Human Bondage (1934) – This is the granddaddy of controversy, especially due its release in the mid-1930s. It’s one of W. Somerset Maugham’s best tragedies and stars Bette Davis and Leslie Howard. Yet another fine example of our weaknesses as humans, it was definitely a risk for the movie studios. A few of the themes in this incredible film include prostitution, physical handicaps, drug abuse, dishonesty and of course, true love we show some, but who throw it back at us. It was a powerful film then and remains so after all these years. Depending on how you define a “happily ever after” will allow you to determine if it’s a true love story or not. It’s one of Bette Davis’s best films.
