There are two categories of modern day fishing and they include, commercial fishing and recreational fishing. Commercial fishing as distinguished from recreational fishing is one which is undertaken for a living. Recreational fishing, upon the other hand, is done for pleasure or competition. As a sport, Fishing guidelines are set up and there are limitations on what fish can be caught. These guidelines are overseen by International Game Fishing Association (IGFA), an international fishing sport authority. One of the rules observed in a fishing sport is the prohibition on the use of nets or hooking the fish in any part of the body aside from in the mouth itself. The typical method used in the sport is to fish using rods, reels, hooks and lines. Competitions and tournaments are now turning as a popular type of leisure or recreational fishing. Prizes are awarded on the winners and the gauge is determined by the time spent and the total weight of the class of fish that is caught. Fishermen supply a considerable amount of food to a number of countries around the world. These fishermen are under an activity known as commercial fishing. There is a high level of risk involved in commercial fishing. Fishermen need to go ashore and fish miles from the land under all kind of conditions. There are no rules in this form of fishing and commercial fishermen have the say on what method or methods of catching fish may be applied provided however that the method utilized is within legal parameters. There are international treaties which are drawn for the benefit of commercial fishing industry. Fishermen are required to observe particular restrictions and their catch is limited to a certain quota. One of the known reasons for the limitation is the likelihood that it would have adverse effects to the jobs of local fisher folks. Todays categories of fishermen are small scale and large scale fishermen. Fishing methods which are used differ from one country to the other. It may vary according to the region, fish species and fishing technology employed. Tuna, salmon, lobster, shrimp, crab and squid are but few of the commonly caught fish species. Recreational and commercial fishing methods have their own opposing attributes. Commercial fishing is a profession or a chosen career while recreational fishing is more of a hobby. In recreational fishing, the catch which does not fit the requirement of the sport are often released back to the water and this is not true with respect to commercial fishing. Whatever may the underlying reasons for the difference be, the excitement and love to the work or sport is a common ground.
