The Top 4 Tips to Simplify Cleaning and Repairing your Gutters

If you are going to clean your gutters, make sure you have a ladder tall enough to allow you to work with the gutter below chest height. Reaching above your head to clean your gutters can be messy and dangerous. In most cases, working from a ladder can be safer than bending over while on the roof.

Remove as much debris by hand as possible. Use a bucket if possible. Dropping debris below on landscaping can cause a mess that is more difficult to clean up than the original job. Next, use a garden hose to flush the smaller dirt down the spouts. It might be necessary to remove the spouts if they are clogged. Your gutters should have insertable screens or ball strainers at the downspouts. These are designed to prevent leaves and debris from getting stuck on the way down. If you don't have any you might want to install these before cleaning.

Inspect your gutters for:

- leaks

- damage or dents

- any disconnections

- blockage from tree branches

- detachment from your house

There are now many gutter protection devices available to prevent or minimize gutter cleaning. Often these are designed to cover the gutters to stop debris getting in but still letting water flow. While the cost is sometimes a consideration, these devices can eliminate the periodic and time consuming chore of cleaning gutters.

Driving Water Away From Your Home's Foundation:

Excessive water can damage your home's foundation and leak into your basement. Driving the water away from your home with a slope and gutter can reduce or eliminate basement leaks and preserve your foundation.

Downspouts direct water several ways:

Surface Extension - these pieces differ in length from a few feet to six feet. Extensions can be the same as the gutters or they are available in flexible materials which make directing the water easier. Water should be direct toward ground that slopes away from the structure.

Underground Pipe - This is a way to hide the extension and drain the water. In some cases these are required (such as when the downspout ends at a concrete sidewalk or driveway.)

Collecting Rain Water:

This rainwater can also be collected. Nowadays there are lots of different types of decorative rain barrels available for collecting rainwater. These come in sizes ranging from 50 to 300 gallons. There are downspout inline filters and you can even install an electric pump to drain your rain barrel and direct the water to your intended use. Rainwater can be used for lawns, plants, gardens, trees, houseplants, and greenhouses.

Repairing Gutters:

While making minor gutter repairs can be fairly easy, major repairs and replacements can be daunting tasks depending on your skill level.

Many gutter systems are made from aluminum and repair can require several tools including a hacksaw and rivet gun, besides the usual suspects such as a hammer and pair of pliers. Wearing a strong pair of work gloves is recommended as gutter pieces have sharp edges.

Gutters and downspouts are made up of sections and pieces. The down spouts are enclosed and usually come in 10' lengths. Gutters are attached to buildings with spikes, ferrules, and straps. Straps slip under roof flashing to attach the open gutter runs that collect the water. A slip connector holds gutter run sections together. There are also tees and elbows as need to direct downspouts.

Most all connections are made with sheet metal screws and rivets. Some are then caulked to prevent leakage.

While some parts can be fitted and connected on the ground, most work will be done on a ladder. If the job makes you uncomfortable, you can always find a reliable contractor.
