Choosing Your Wedding Colours

One of the most important parts of your wedding is the colour scheme. You can begin to choose your theme with a few thoughts about the mood you would like to evoke. You probably already have a good idea in mind for your ideal wedding; imagine what it looks like. What words comes to mind when you describe it? Are you thinking of a contemporary and clean ceremony or one that is more classic and traditional? Perhaps you want something formal or ornate?

Tradition holds that two colours will be chosen and along with a neutral such as silver, gold and ivory they will be used to spruce up everything from what the bridal party wears to the decorations and favours to the invitations. Think about the colours you choose as fashionable dress styles, too. People you care about and love are going to be wearing those colours. High contrasting colours look quite splendid when paired correctly; perhaps a chocolate brown paired with Tiffany blue or powdery pink. If you desire a contemporary look try a monochromatic colour palette that has different shades of one colour such as eggplant and lilac, beige and ivory, or pale yellow with daffodil. Use paint chips and fabric samples so that you can more easily envision your colour combinations.

When you choose your wedding colour palette you will want to keep in mind all the various greenery and flowers that you can use as coordinates or accents. Flowers such as calla lilies, tulips, daisies, roses, cherry blossoms, daffodils and hydrangeas can offer you a wide variety of color choices. You can also use berries for ornamentation or the more picturesque fruits such as lady apples, Meyer lemons and pomegranates to give your wedding an aura of bounty. The greenery typically used to wedding display includes boxwood, ferns and ivy. If you have decided on a more traditional Holiday wedding, you would naturally go for evergreens and poinsettia. If you have an edgier taste you can also incorporate feathers;

Consider the colours of the flowers and greenery you plan to use. Some popular wedding flowers that come in distinctive shades include roses, calla lilies, daisies, tulips, cherry blossoms, hydrangeas and daffodils. Ornamental berries or picturesque fruits like Meyer lemons, lady apples, or pomegranates lend a feeling of natural bounty. Greenery can include ivy, boxwood, or ferns. For a traditional holiday wedding, poinsettias and evergreens are a natural.

The setting for your wedding is also an important factor. If you are having a beach wedding you might want to choose more airy colours or even nautical or tropical accents such as palm trees, ornamental grasses and seashells. If you are having a theme based upon a certain culture, such as an Asian-themed wedding, you will want to consider the meaning and the traditional colours used in the culture; Asian weddings are typically in the red, black and gold colour scheme. An Irish or Celtic wedding might be lovely in different shades of green. And for sports team based weddings or military weddings you are already supplied with an appropriate colour palette.
