How to Install a New Security Light

Having an outdoor security light is a great way to ward off want to be intruders. These lights work by using an infrared or microwave sensor and anytime anyone or anything (animals included) get in range of these sensors it will trigger an electronic impulse and the light will go on for a set amount of time. So when an intruder sees a house that has these security lights mounted, it would be wise of them just to move on, and studies show that they do.

There are a few basic steps you need to take in order to switch your existing normal light with a new security light. As always you need to turn off the circuit in which it is attached to. Make sure you turn off the right one by using a circuit tester or just cut the power to the entire house.

Now you need to remove the old light bulb fixture and cover by removing the screws and carefully pulling it off the mount. Then you can go ahead and loosen the fixture or mount as well. Usually they are attached with nothing more than a few screws.

When the fixture is loosened it should be able to dangle from the wires and will pull away from the wall, ceiling, or soffit. Carefully remove all of the wire caps or electrical tape and then completely remove the fixture.

The next step is to take the new fixture box and connect the related wires to the house wires. All of them should be color coded and labeled to make it easier on you. You'll need to use wire caps or nuts or electrical tape to make sure the wires are fastened properly and won't create a spark or shock someone.

Once you have the wires synced and attached, then go ahead and fasten the fixture into the house. The light plate should fit nicely into the new fastener with just a few bolts or screws. An outdoor security light normally comes standard with a weather proof water resistant protector plate as well. Don't forget to install this just in case it was to get wet.

Now all you have left to do is screw in the light bulbs and the globe or cover if there is one. That's it! Turn the power back on and give it a test. You should also be a few options on the light for you to adjust the timer of the light and/or how sensitive you want it to be. Most people don't like it going off if a falling leaf were to blow in front of it.

Once you have it adjusted accordingly, then you will be that much safer from possible intruders. In some cases it may be smart to install multiple lights to cover all entrances to the house.
