Stages Of Child Development

There are a lot of books on the market that will take this subject and explore it in great depth. As l am writing primarily for parental guidance l will try to explain the basic fundamentals and leave it up to you if you would like to read further.

We are more concerned with our pre – school children here and this stage is known as ‘Egocentric’. Basically what this means is that your child is concerned only with their own needs and wants. ‘I want it so l should have it!’ everything is very black and white in this stage; it helps to realise that this is a natural process.

This is where your fabulous parenting skills come into play! Accept your child’s demands as an important part of growing up but don’t give in to them and you will help them move onto the next part of the stage. (Read my fact sheet on ‘Tantrums’ for further advice in this area).
‘I want to belong and be approved of’. If a child see’s a smile then it knows that it is liked. A cross face means that they are not liked. In their world it is as simple as that! A child is either good or bad.

As the child matures a little, fairness becomes very important to them. They will start to challenge anything they see as not fair ‘you did it so why can’t l?’ this is the time when it is very important to lay down ground rules and to stick to them. Also keep your promises and let them see you doing it. ‘Mum is having a coffee at the moment but when l have finished it we can play for ten minutes’, they won’t have a proper concept of time yet but be fair with them, they will learn to understand.

As l have stressed many times before, children learn by example. Obviously you are going to do things that they simply are not allowed to. But common sense should tell you that if you have a biscuit before a meal but say that they can not you will have a fuss on your hands!

Please remember that the purpose of these fact sheets is to help you understand your child a little better so that the two of you can enjoy each other and life a little more.

•Tantrums And How To Deal With Them
Tantrums are expressions of frustration or rage that show themselves in children usually between the ages of two and four. A Tantrum is a demand for attention that only works when the parent is embarrassed or intimated enough to give in to the child’s demands. Therefore it makes sense to keep away from the child until the tantrum has stopped. If you are at home one of the best ways to do this is to just walk away and get on with other things, such as housework, as noisily as you can, getting...

•CHILDHOOD PLEASURES
The children who enjoy life the most are the ones who have learnt to recognise the pleasure in the current situation. Those who are constantly striving for the next thing will never be satisfied. As parents we need to show our children how to enjoy life. Take your time over things; don’t always talk about what is going to happen tomorrow or next week.
