Working With Copper Pipe in Household Plumbing Projects

What are the unspoken and oft unmentioned keys to success when working with copper plumbing? Always shut off the water supply before cutting or disassembling existing plumbing.

Copper ,most popular for supply lines but also of great use for drain and vent lines. is convenient to work with and very durable, but costly. It is available inn 10 to 20 foot lengths or as flexible tubing in 30, 60 and 100 foot coils. Rigid pipe is tougher , but flexible tubing is much easier to install and handle, particularly when adding to pre-existing plumbing and plumbing fixtures - or 20 straight lengths, or in flexible (soft temper) 30 - or 60 foot coils. Rigid pipe, which may be as wide as 12 inches in diameter, makes for neater installation, while flexible pipe made into diameters of up to 2inches is ideal for underground use of for snaking through walls. The home remodeler can run flexible pipe for long distances without the need for fittings.

Copper pipe is available in three wall thicknesses (or weights) and is color coded for easy identification. Type K (green) is the heaviest material and is used primarily in commercial settings. Solder , a mixture of metals , with a low melting point ( approx 400 degrees Fahrenheit) This substance melts easily , then cools rapidly to form a solid , permanent and waterproof seal. Old solders were an equal mix of tin and lead. For health reasons, the lead has now generally been removed out of solder. In 2010 solder is a composition of metals - including tin, silver and antimony and usually sold in 1/8 inch diameter wire wrapped onto a spool. Type M (red) is the thinnest walled type and is used for above ground household applications. Check your local plumbing code for the type for the type and thickness of pipe required in your local city, state or Canadian provincial areas. Often it seems some building do not permit or allow Type M pipes in residential plumbing systems. It never hurts to make a simple phone call or enquiry.

New materials have revolutionized plumbing. No matter what type of piping that you already utilize and have - copper , steel , cast iron, plastic or even good old fashioned - but not too healthy - lead, you can usually make a choice among several materials to use for repairs or a new branch. The word plumbing comes from the Latin word for lead, and there are still a fair number of lead pipes and fittings around. But today a variety of materials are used and employed in household plumbing . These include copper ,cast iron, steel brass and plastic. Several are likely to be combined in a home or commercial building. Each brings a balance of benefits in economy , durability and convenience that makes it a choice for a particular job or situation. And the combination cannot be without wise as well as carefully considered choice as some materials cannot join others without special precautions , tools , chemicals or procedures. Before soldering a substance called flux , or soldering paste is quickly brushed onto the pipe. The fitting and the pieces of pipe are then joined together and heated with a propane or butane torch. During heating , the flux prevents oxide and oxidization from forming on the metallic surfaces and thus helps the solder flow smoothly and evenly.

Copper , most popular for supply lines but also for drain and vent lines, is convenient to work with, and very durable but costly. It is available as rigid pipe in 10- and 20- foot lengths and as flexible tubing in 30- , 60- and 100-foot coils. Rigid pipe is tougher , but flexible tubing is downright easier to install , particularly when added to existing plumbing. Rigid pipe must be soldered with sweat fittings while flexible tubing can also be joined mechanically with flare or compression fittings. Alternatively, compression fittings can be used to join flexible pipe, in any hard-to-reach areas or where you want a temporary, removable joint, but soldering is the technique most often employed by home handyman and heating, plumbing and air conditioning tradesman professionals on the job and job sites.

Whatever pipe material you choose , the job will often always go more easily and smoothly, of you follow the procedures and routines used by professional plumbers. Complete as much of the assembly as you can , before traveling to the work site , on or at your workbench. Soldering generally involves use of an open flame that may not be visible when properly adjusted. Use caution. Protect flammable surfaces from fire with sheet metal, a heat-proof pad or wet rags.
