Teaching Children Music Is Possible Even if They Don t Have an Ear for It

We often notice how life treats us or our loved ones unfairly. For example, you would very much like teaching children music, but it is simply impossible, because they have no ear for music!

But honestly, an ear for music is not inherited. If nobody in your family tree had a talent for music, it doesn't mean that your child cannot be a "musical" one. You probably don't know that there was a time when you could easily make your child super talented.

Do not believe me? Let's check! Your child already knows how to talk? Most likely, the answer is yes. Now tell me how he learned this? Maybe he was born talking?

He learned to speak from the people who used speech in front of him and talked with him, is it not? So, for teaching children music, you should surround them with musical sounds, whether from CDs, TV or musical toys, right from the time they are still babies. The more your child is exposed to music, the higher his musical abilities will be.

If among you there is a sceptic, who believes that an ear for music is only given by God, let him answer the question: Why do children born into German speaking families start speaking in German? Why do children born into Russian speaking families start speaking in Russian? How come children start speaking the same language that their parents speak?

The answer is simple and obvious: the children say what they hear and do what they see around them.

If one parent has no ear for music and he or she sings, or even just tries to sing in the presence of the child, don't expect the child to develop a musical ear. On the contrary, the child will have the same problem as his parents. Never sing in front of children if you have no ear for music! You'll deprive them of any chance of success.

Why? Here's a simple example. Imagine that you, in the presence of a child, point at a dog and say it's a cat. After several repetitions, the child will confidently call a dog a cat and you'll need to work hard to restore the truth to its place. You should be well aware that your child needs to hear only the perfect-sounding music, not the fake singing.

But what if the child has some hearing impediments, and he wants to learn how to play a musical instrument, or even more difficult - sing?

Firstly, find a music teacher who is able to fix this defect in the child. Such a teacher must have experience working with children who do not sing and just "buzz." Needless to say, you need to give enough time for this, but it's usually worth it. Within 2-3 years of special training, these "difficult" children start singing like a nightingale, believe my professional experience.

Secondly, send your son or daughter to the children's choir. This is the best place where your child can acquire a musical ear.

And thirdly, if you decide on teaching children music, in spite of the lack of musical ear, send them to a music school and not to a private music teacher. In the school, there'll be a team of young musicians and the opportunity to attend group classes such as choir, band and orchestra. It is here that your child will have a quick "recovery."

And, perhaps most importantly - believe in your children and help them achieve success!
