Diet Disease Gout Disease of Kings No More

Gout was once the 'disease of kings' due to their diet, but not any more. Anybody can have gout nowadays. Easy access to relatively cheap, mass-produced food and alcohol has meant that we are all at the mercy of gout through our diet.

Gout disease isn't a disease at all, it's a condition caused by too much uric acid in the bloodstream. This excess uric acid can then form into microscopic crystals over time, which then accumulate in the joints and tissue around the joints.

The body's natural inflammatory reaction to these crystals causes the symptoms of gout; redness, stiffness, inflammation, swelling, heat when touched, and of course, excruciating pain.

So where does the disease of kings fit in here? Even away back then, they realized that food and drink played a very important part in the onset of gout attacks.

And since kings, lords and people in high places had access to the best food (not the healthiest perhaps) and plenty of it, plus, copious amounts of wine and beer, they were more likely to suffer from gout than the poor people with their meagre diets.

What we know today is that our bodies and foods contain chemical compounds called purines. And we also now know that when these purines break down in the normal process of events, uric acid is produced in the blood.

The kidneys normally process and flush waste uric acid from the body via urine. But sometimes, for various reasons, they are unable to that, with the result that there are high levels of uric acid circulating in the blood. And as we saw above this eventually causes gout.

So today, more and more people are suffering from gout. And the modern diet is at the heart of it. Remember it isn't a disease, it's a condition which can be brought on by your diet.

If you suffer from gout, then to get rid of it and prevent it returning, you need to take a long hard look at your diet. If it's a typical western diet then it'll contain a lot of protein rich, fatty, salty foods.

As a general rule protein rich foods are high in purines, and, remember that purines produce uric acid. So you need to reduce your intake of purine rich foods. Some you'll need to avoid completely in your diet.

These are typically fatty red meats, poultry, fish, shellfish and so on. And alcohol, you need to avoid it, especially beer I'm afraid.
