Generating Accurate Reports With Construction Software

All businesses, including construction companies, need to be able to produce accurate, up to date, easy to understand and complete reports for a variety of end-users. This will depend on their particular position and function within the company, or even in the community, or perhaps even investors or brokers.

Of course, the kinds of reports that you need to produce will depend on your industry and also who will be viewing the reports. For example, in a construction company, a field supervisor will want to see a different report than the accounting department who will want something different that investors, and so on and so forth. The bottom line is that you likely have a big audience for your reports, all of whom will want to see reports that highlight certain things and ignore others. Having software do this for you is much easier, faster, and more accurate.

Many times a business tries to operate with software that has less than adequate reporting abilities. This results from the fact that most software is very generic and it is difficult to get generic software to adapt to fit company-specific issues.

Some construction management software programs make responsible and respectable attempts to incorporate a reporting module in their packages, and some might rely on third-party reporting add-on packages to fill that need. In most cases, the reporting functionality will provide generic and basic business information; unless great care is taken to customize such modules or add-ons to the specific construction company business needs; if, indeed, such modules or add-ons are even customizable.

However, do not let a lack of solid reporting functionality keep you from buying a particular piece of software. If you find construction software that has poor reporting abilities but is perfect in every other sense for your needs, try to find a third-party that specializes in reporting for construction businesses. If you can find a third party that will customize the software you want to buy to make the reporting functionality perform better, then you may not need to find a different piece of software.

In some cases, a third party vendor may be able to offer a reporting module that uses the internet. If this is the case, it will obviously be important to know whether or not your current software is web-enabled and what limitations it has. Only then can you ensure the seamless integration between your software and the reporting module.

Construction management software reporting functionality should include a number of business report levels, to meet the needs of the various end-users. Such reports might run the gamut from a simple snapshot-in-time view for customers, investors, brokers and company leaders to a variable-enabled and comprehensively detailed report for company Managers, CFO’s, Supervisors, Lawyers, Accountants, Public Relations Officers, and others.

There is not doubt that reporting modules add many great benefits to construction software and those who use the software. However, it is important that the reporting abilities of software integrates seamlessly with the rest of the software and company processes. If you have trouble finding reporting modules for your current software, speaking with a third-party expert will likely be helpful. l.
