A walk through any shopping mall or high street will reveal numerous shoe shops, all selling different kinds of shoes. Men, women and children throng these stores looking for products that are affordable, attractive, comfortable and fashionable. Sports brands and fashion designers have cashed into this opportunity for ages and will continue to do so.

Popular shoe brands include Nike, Converse, Adidas, Dr. Scholl, Timberland, Hush Puppies, Naturalizer, New Balance and Polo Sport among others. Of course everyone knows Bata World, that faithful provider of Bata shoes. If you are an ultra fashionable female, then you probably are a fan of Italian shoes and regularly purchase shoe brands with exotic names such as Luciano Padovan, Bruno Magli and Via Spiga among others. These are just a few of the famous shoe brands that are sold all over the world. There are virtually hundreds of thousands of local and international shoe brands and they are in business because everybody needs shoes, not just for today, but always. We keep changing our shoes according to the seasons, our activities, latest fads, fashion designs, according to whim and of course we even outgrow our shoes or need to replace them due to tear and wear.

Have you ever wondered how shoes are made? As with many industries, shoe production started of as a craftsman’s industry and indeed many shoes are still handmade including highly priced and very stylish specimen. However, technology has now provided shoe makers with machines which facilitate the mass production of shoes to serve the global market. Shoe makes are skilled artisans who have mastered the techniques of interpreting shoe designs and cutting, pressing and finishing shoes using a wide range of materials, equipment and accessories.

Shoes have various components that are combined to form a shoe. These include the outer sole and heel that usually make contact with the ground. The inner part of the shoe that makes contact with the foot is referred to as the inner sole while the outer part that covers the foot is conveniently referred to as the outer. Most shoes have some padding between the outer and inner soles and this has the effect of making shoes really comfortable. With the exception of shoe types such as flip flops and sandals, shoes tend to have some form of fasteners such as laces, Velcro or even zippers. While some of the shoe components are usually produced within shoe factories, others are produced elsewhere and purchased by shoe makers who combine them with the parts that are produced in-house to produce the desired effect.
