Should You Open Your Own Coffee Shop

Many of us, particularly in this economic environment, dream of opening up our own business. The lure of not having to answer to a boss or being at the mercy of corporate dictates can be very appealing. Coffee shops are very popular right now and you may think this is the perfect idea for your small business. But, should you open up your own coffee shop? Before jumping in with both feet, there are certain things that you should consider. In this article, we will provide you with the top questions that you should ask yourself before opening your own coffee shop. Are you ready? Let’s begin.

Can I afford it?
Working for yourself and enjoying all of the profits can be very enticing. But before opening up your own coffee shop you need to ask yourself if you can afford it. As with any small business, do not expect to see any profits until after the first year. So you need to evaluate your finances to see if you can afford to stay afloat until the profits flow in.

Do I have the time?
Yes, as boss, you will be setting your own hours. But a flexible schedule and sleeping in are not reasonable expectations. Opening your own coffee shop will require many long hours, days, weeks, and months. You will have to start extremely early in the morning and work into the evening. Particularly in the beginning, expect to be onsite the majority of the time until all the kinks get worked out, you can pay enough staff, and you have trustworthy employees. In essence, many new shop owners have to be a bit of a “workaholic” in order to build their client base and get their names out there. Are you up for the challenge?

Do I have the dedication?
Opening up your coffee shop may be very enticing right now. You need to ask yourself if your dedication will be as strong several months down the road. Opening up a business will require you to work harder than ever before. If you have reservations that your enthusiasm may wane, you may want to think twice about opening a coffee shop. Most coffee shops open up with the owner and maybe a few relatives as the only employees.

Am I detail oriented?
Being organized, detail oriented, and good business skills can make the difference between profitability and going out of business. You will need to keep stock of inventory, balance your accounting sheets and registers, and hundreds of other small details operating a coffee shop successfully will require. You need to ask yourself if you are adept at these requirements or can hire someone who is. If you answered ,”yes” then opening your coffee shop may make sense.

If any of these questions raise a red flag of doubt in your mind, slow down and really think about the reality of opening up your own coffee shop. You may however have answered every question with a resounding “yes”. If so, opening up your own coffee shop is a sound decision and you will probably enjoy much success. Either way, good luck to you on your new adventure and here’s a drink of coffee to your success!
