Top 7 Tips to Secure a Pay Rise in a Recession

Before you say it, yes it is possible to get a pay rise, even in a recession. But the thing is: you’re not likely to be given one and that’s the difference. In any economic climate, you have to go and get a pay rise; very rarely do they just land on your desk at the end of the month.

You may have heard people saying ‘you make your own luck’ and a pay rise is no different, you have to put the effort in to give you the best chance of securing one.

So here’s the top 7 tried and tested ways to help you get paid what you’re worth:

1. Find out what the average industry wage is for your position. Use job websites and trade magazines to find out what similarly qualified employees could get at another company. Why? Well, the more you know, the stronger your case for a pay rise is.

2. Make sure your pay rise is justified. It’s an obvious one, but make sure you show your boss that you are meeting and surpassing the requirements of your job description. Show your employer you are taking on additional responsibilities or are helping the overall productivity of his or her company.

3. Work smarter not harder. Work towards the goals of management. Be a cost effective member of your company by doing all you can to get stuff done and help others. Remember: many companies have implemented cost-cutting measures so try to show how your work has helped to reduce costs.

4. Make the product of your work worthy of a pay rise. Keep in mind your goal to be paid more and complete your work to that desired level of quality. Do not finish tasks with a minimal input of effort; instead engage the fullest extent of your capabilities (no-one ever got a pay rise for being mediocre, apart from maybe civil servants).

5. Justify the pay rise by offering something in return. Take on another task or stay late occasionally to reduce the work load. By offering your boss something in return for the pay rise it becomes a win-win situation.

6. Request an appointment with your boss to discuss the pay rise. Dedicate some time specifically to the request, do not catch him or her on the fly. By apportioning time to the matter, you can both be focused and properly discuss your pay rise.

7. Have evidence. No matter how friendly your boss may be, treat the pay rise request properly and with respect. You’re asking for more money, which has to come from the company profits, so treat it like a court case and have physical evidence (facts, figures, projects) ready to present to the judge to back your case.

Even in the current economic climate: if you work hard and are well respected, you have nothing to lose by requesting a pay rise. Which brings us onto the eighth and probably most important tip – You don’t ask, You don’t get. So go get it!
