•2 Burning Questions for Google in 2011
Happy New Year from a curious shareholder, Google(Nasdaq: GOOG)! As we swing into 2011, you can probably tell me how to wish someone this season's best in dozens of languages, but that's not why I'm here right now. In fact, even the biggest, baddest search engine in the world (that's you!) can't tell me what I really want to know today.
I have two burning questions, and it would take a time machine to answer either one with any accuracy:
First off, what will your share price be 365 days...
•Is It Time to Sell This Sector
The past year wasn't a blowout one for IPOs, but the market did demonstrate its ability to inhale a good business and spit out a bad one. Both established and speculative companies made the list of IPOs this year, and performance wasn't too shabby for some of the higher-profile names:
Tesla and Molycorp are showing nothing but losses right now, but the market is willing to take a risk on companies with potential. General Motors and RealD have established businesses, even if RealD wasn't able...
•The Best Stocks for 2011 IMAX
When looking for a great stock, I have three simple criteria: I want a story I can believe in, a business I think will be around for the long haul, and a price that doesn't make me cringe. For 2011, the company that fits the bill is IMAX (Nasdaq: IMAX). IMAX has proven over the past year to be a lasting business and is expanding its core business while investing in opportunities for the future.
The IMAX experience:- I really started noticing IMAX's differentiation when Avatar was released...
•2010 FDA Approvals and a Look Ahead
Anyone who's kept an eye on the drugmakers this year won't be surprised by this statistic: The Food and Drug Administration approved fewer drugs this year than it has since 2007. According to the Wall Street Journal, which took the time to add them all up, the FDA only approved 21 drugs this year, compared with 25 in 2009 and 24 in 2008.
Dwelling on the past isn't usually all that useful for investors; the markets are forward-looking after all. But a little review of recent drug approvals...
•The Best Stocks for 2011 Thompson Creek Metals
Before I tell you why Thompson Creek Metals (NYSE: TC)is one of the best stocks to own in 2011, let's get this disclaimer out of the way: It is not for the faint of heart. Over the past three years, Thompson Creek has seen its share price trade north of $25 and during the bleakest market days watched as its share price dipped below $3. Currently, it's sitting right in the middle of that range at $14.55, and I'm going to give you three reasons why molybdenum and Thompson Creek could be heading...
•4 Questions for Sirius XM in 2011
It's been a monster year for Sirius XM Radio(Nasdaq: SIRI) and its investors, but what will the new year bring? Let's dive into the four questions whose answers will ultimately dictate the stock's direction come 2011. The satellite radio giant ended a rocky 2009 on a cautiously optimistic note. Sirius XM closed out the year with 18.5 million subscribers, and CEO Mel Karmazin was publicly targeting 500,000 net additions for 2010. Sirius XM hit 19 million subscribers as Karmazin projected, but...
•Microsoft will be launching Window 8 in 2012
Speaking at a Microsoft Developer Forum in Tokyo today, Ballmer said Microsoft is obviously hard at work on the next version of Windows. As we look forward to the next generation of Windows systems, which will come out next year, there's a whole lot more coming, he continued. As we progress through the year, you ought to expect to hear a lot about Windows 8. Windows 8 slates, tablets, PCs, a variety of different form factors.
Windows 8 Beta:- Once again there are mixed opinions in regards to...
•The Best Stocks for 2011 Range Resources
This year has been kind to most commodities. Rare earth metals? Ridiculous. Silver? Stupendous. Orange juice? Outstanding. Corn? Cowabunga. Natural gas? Not so much. Prices are down around 24% this year, as the market remains stubbornly oversupplied. Weak postrecession demand has met with an abundance of gas flowing from the nation's shale wells. Pontifications that declines from conventional gas wells would overwhelm these unconventional supply additions have not panned out. Daily gas...
•The Best Stocks for 2011 Dendreon
I'll admit it: I should have picked Dendreon (Nasdaq: DNDN)as my 2010 best buy. Shares are up nearly 40% this year. I didn't have confidence that its prostate cancer treatment, Provenge, would get past the Food and Drug Administration. Better yet, I should have picked it before the positive phase 3 data was announced in early 2009; shares are up more than 500% since then. Dendreon isn't going to see those kinds of returns in 2011. Drugmakers with binary events like Orexigen Therapeutics...
•Challenging the Bulls Is the Housing Market Still a Threat to the Stock Market
Coming off the rally stocks have seen in the latter half of 2010, hopes are high for 2011. But several dark clouds remain on the economic horizon, with the lingering housing crisis looming largest. Unlike most other industries, the sector has yet to stage anything resembling a recovery. And the light at the end of tunnel may be further off than anyone would care to admit. David Rosenberg of Gluskin-Sheff argues that if anything, we're underestimating the depth of the housing slump. Right now,...
