Healthy Kidney Habits

Healthy Kidney

Common perception about the functioning of kidney that it simply works as a strainer for separating the excreta is only partially true. Kidney also performs the some other important functions also. It produces vitamin D, which plays a vital role in strengthening our body. Kidney also produces hormone which regulates the blood pressure in the body. So it is very important to keep your kidney healthy. Keeping your kidneys fit while you are relatively young will reduce your chances of kidney ailment when you are older. While some people may be inclined to renal troubles, there are still things that everyone can do to keep the kidneys healthy.

Awareness about the factors causing problems of kidney helps in keeping it away.

Two main causes which may be attributed for failure of Kidney are high blood pressure and diabetes. These two disorders must be kept under control so that the chances of malfunctioning of kidney may be reduced.

Tips for Healthy Kidney -

- Drink a lot of water throughout the day. Lack of water can cause needless stress on your renal system, over a period of time.

- Vegetarian diet has no substitute to reduce the threat of diseases. Therefore you should mainly subsist on vegetables and non-vegetarian food should be taken rarely. Animal protein is accountable for accumulation of calcium, uric acid and oxalates in urine. These things enhance the chances of formation of stones in Kidney. If you have healthy kidneys, you can safely eat up to one gram of protein per Kg. of your body weight. For example, if you weigh 70 kilos and are in good health, you can safely eat up to 70 grams of protein.

- Eat fruits and vegetables that contribute to kidney health. Vegetables like cabbage, sprouts, cauliflower etc. are recommended. Apples, garlic, onion, and peppers are also beneficial. Avoid excess intake of tomatoes. Black beans, Kidney beans and Mung beans are also helpful.

- Reduce the workload on your kidneys by restricting your consumption of toxins and acid forming foods like salty foods, tea, coffee, additives etc. Don’t use alcohol and tobacco.

- Avoid prolonged use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen etc., since these medicines are tough on the kidneys. If you are on a prescription for one of these drugs, frequent blood tests should be done so that your doctor can identify any potential problem and switch your medication before complication arises.

- Exercise regularly, and cut back on fats and sugars while you are young to avoid becoming diabetic later in life.

- Avoid over-exposure to heavy metals. Lead, chromium, cadmium, mercury etc. are main perils to kidney health. If you are vulnerable to kidney disorders, it is advised that you avoid intake of the things that contain chromium compounds. Also keep away from vitamin supplements with chromium and cadmium.

The body stores calcium in the bones, but it also relies on maintaining constant levels of calcium in the blood through diet. If the blood calcium level falls, then a hormone is released which increases calcium absorption in the kidneys to restore the blood calcium level. The same hormone, along with Vitamin D, also stimulates calcium release from bone. So, healthy kidneys are also important in protecting against osteoporosis. Moreover, kidney stones are often caused by the kidneys' inability to handle calcium absorption properly. Therefore it is vital to take care of your kidneys in a comprehensive manner.
