Winter Plants and Winter Gardening

Some plants can only grow in chilly weather and during winter seasons. However, it is a general fact that growing plants during frosty winter season can prove to be a challenge, even for some of the more experienced gardeners. It is important that you prepare for winter gardening by selecting appropriate plants to grow. Most of the plants that remain dormant during winter are hardy plants that originate from places with similar climate. Annual plants survive cold periods as dormant seeds.
Winter plants are easily affected by frost and freeze. Very few plants can survive frozen or sodden ground. This is the major cause for plant’s demise and also indicates why native plants are hard to grow in countries with different climate. Plants thrive in moist ground. To improve drainage, you can improve drainage by filling your garden with organic matter and grit. The arrival of spring allows soil with good drainage to warm faster. Chilly wind tends to dry plants out. To counter the effects of wind, some plants (i.e. conifer tree) evolved leaves with small surface area. This reduces moisture loss. To reduce the effects of strong wind, you can provide windbreaks.
As you trim your plants in preparation for winter, try to leave some dead top-growth on the plant as it helps to provide protection against frost. This is not necessary if you live on a frost-free area. For plants that absolutely cannot survive winter, you need to dig up and remove them for keeps till spring. Some of the winter plants include rose, magnolia, wisteria, and tulip. Ensure that the roots of the plants are not exposed due to repetitive expansion and shrinking of ground (i.e. in extreme weather with multiple frosts a year). To prevent this, you can layer mulch over the soil for protection
Winter gardening remains a challenge but you can ensure that your plants survive if you made preparations beforehand.
