Obesity simply means excess fat. The body stores extra calories in fat and obesity occurs when your caloric intake exceeds the amount of calories expended or burned. Obesity is not caused by a lack of willpower but is multi-factorial. There is a general consensus that genetics is a component of obesity. The North American sedentary lifestyle caused by people working in office settings, children stay inside and play video games and donât live an active lifestyle. Being active is what burns calories. At the same time, the prevalence of fast food in the US has grown at alarming rates. This combination of the population becoming less active combined with easy access to fast foods with lots of calories and energy has led to an obesity epidemic and obesity is found to be a precursor for many health issues What causes obesity? Obesity is caused by many factors. Some weight increases are caused by medicines (ie: amitriptiline). Also obesity is related to food types we eat (specially fastfood high in fat), physical inactivity and medical diseases. It takes 3500 calories to put on a pound of weight and conversely it 3500 calories burned to shed a pound of weight. Here is a general rule for figuring out your daily calorie need, take you weight and divide by 2.2 then multiply that number by 24 and that is your approximately your daily need. So if you weighed 125 pounds you would do this Your weight 125 Divide your weight by 2.2: 125 divided by 2.2 = 57 24 hours in a day, so you multiply 57 by 24: 57X24= 1364 Now please I realize this does not take into account your age and other factors but it is just a general and quick calculation. It is widely accepted that genetic is a significant contributor to obesity (25-30%) affecting our metabolism; Pregnancy also seems to be a contributing factor; Many women feel weight gain with each pregnancy and can't lose it between pregnancies. This leads to a progressive increase in weight. Weight gain occurs when we eat more calories than our bodies use up. If the food we eat provides more calories than our bodies need, the excess is converted to fat. Initially, fat cells increase in size. When they can no longer expand, they increase in number. If we lose weight, the size of our fat cells decreases, but the number of cells do not. This is why so many people gain back the weight they have worked so hard to lose. Obesity, however, has many causes, including age, gender, genes, psychological makeup and environmental factors. Medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism, depression and glandular (hormonal) conditions, also contribute to the disease. The reasons for obesity are many and complex. It is not simply a result of overeating. Research has shown that in many cases a significant, underlying cause of morbid obesity is genetic. Studies have demonstrated that once the problem is established, efforts such as dieting and exercise programs have a limited ability to provide effective long-term relief. Environmental factors, such as fast food, long days sitting at a desk, and suburban neighborhoods that require cars all magnify hereditary factors such as metabolism and efficient fat storage. Science continues to search for answers. But until the disease is better understood, the control of excess weight is something patients must work at for their entire lives. One of the ways to combat the eating is to eat negative calorie foods, negative calorie foods are foods that have less calories in them than what your body uses to eat and digest these foods, hence they are called negative calorie foods.
