Colic Baby Symptoms and Treatments

Infantile colic coined by Dr. Morris Wessel in 1950 is a condition where a healthy well-fed infant has an outburst of irritability or crying that lasts for a total of three hours everyday stretching to a period of four days each week. This reaction occurs in babies around 2-3 months old and usually subsides by age of 6 months. It is also important to remember that not all fussy babies suffer from colic.

Infantile colic was “researched” by Dr. Morris Wessel in 1950 and it is a condition where a healthy baby has an outbursts of irritability, crying or both of them for around three hours a day and in a period of four days in a week. Each week. This shown up in babies that around two to three months old and usually fades away when they reach six months. It is important to know and remember that not all the 'crybabies' suffer from colic.

Typical episode contains a sudden cry or irritation that last even four hours. During this time baby's face gets flushed. The belly gets prominent and legs are continuously going from flexed to straighten out position. Pretty often the feet are getting cold and hands closes. Colic attacks usually occurs at the beginning of later afternoon or early evening when parents can be a little bit tired. There are babies who are more exposed to infantile colic than others and quite often it is when both of the parents went over the same issue.

The known factors that make colic symptoms just worse are over-feeding baby, especially with a food that contain a lot of sugars, as the undiluted juices for example. It is to note that pretty often that factor is effect of parents wanting to calm down baby by providing more food. They may be increasing amount of gas in the intestine and make the situation worsen. Another factors are excessive anger, anxiety or feat around the baby.

There is a belief that young digestive system or food allergies can be a cause of colic. Therefore, mothers should be cautious with milk products, fruit juices and take any needed changed in babies diet as some of them respond very good to changes like cow's milk to a soya based milk and herbal gripe water is a well known treatment for more than one hundred years.

Another treatment is massaging baby's tummy and back between feedings. It helps baby to burp and leave gas pains. Taking a bottle with different design, having the teat tilted to prevent excessive air intake is a great idea. Lowered amounts of light and calm, quite household while sleep eases a baby with colic. You might want to give a shoot to walking baby in a front-pouch type carrier with legs up and thanks to that pressure off the infant's belly. Homeopathic medications are pretty good – you might want to try simethicone as it is recommended by many people. Wrapping baby in a comfortable blanket is not a bad idea.

It is very important to stay calmly even if it may seem to be hard. Shaking baby will not help and can cause just harm so if your baby is giving you hard times take a break and get someone responsible to take a watch on baby. When you can get calm you can come back and take care of it. Remember that colic is a very typical problem that happens to around 25% of babies. If you suspect that your baby have it be sure to speak with a pediatrician and talk to other people whom infants had similar problem.
