ADHD Symptoms and their Treatments

ADHD, - attention deficit hyperactive disorder' is now thought to effect a staggering five percent of the population. There has been a massive increase in the diagnosis of this condition for children over the past 10 years but it is currently now one of the fastest growing diagnoses in adults. Because of the epidemic in diagnoses and the increasing number of prescriptions that are being written for children and adults alike, one of the most pressing questions has to be how do you know if you have ADHD or not?

Common traits include difficulties in staying on task, forgetting things, disorganised work space and not completing things. Other symptoms may include hyper focusing on certain things that take your attention, even to a compulsive level and difficulty in functioning in personal and work based relationships for example. All these indications can be shown by just about anyone at various times. Diagnostic criteria may also include the inability to hear other people out without interrupting what they have to say, or even blowing your fuse and being unable to keep your temper under certain situations. These are certainly the symptoms of stress or life changes and there are also many other conditions that can mimic ADHD .

Generally, ADHD is listed under three categories which cover the condition. Firstly there is the inattentive type which covers the symptoms of losing focus and concentration and the hyperactive type where keeping still is a challenge and being constantly on the go. There is a third category which is a combined type.

Most children and adults when given a diagnosis follow through with prescribed medication. These fall into a category known as psychotropic drugs which have controversial side effects. One of the better known medications for this condition is called Ritalin or methylphenidate hydrochloride. This work as a stimulant medication in much the same way as cocaine does on the brain. Alternative treatments that do not require drugs are available which may be preferable to start with. So just where do you start. Very often using an integrated approach is more effective. That means using more than one therapy at a time ad in so doing is more likely to address the root cause of the symptoms.

Natural alternatives like getting rid of food additives from the diet, exercise and simply spending time in nature. Other relaxation therapies can be included alongside these as a natural treatment to the symptoms of ADHD.
