The Difference Between Antiperspirants and Aluminum Free Deodorant

Everyone does sweat, so there is no way around it - when we exercize, get stressed or if the temperature goes up, so does the amount of sweat under your arms. This often produces an unpleasant odor that can be embarrassing. Sadly many people address this by using a deodorant or an antiperspirant, but there are a number of differences between the two, especially the fact that anti-perspirants contain aluminim, and then there are aluminum-free deodorants.

Under the arms, there are two types of glands: apocrine and eccrine, which are the most numerous sweat glands and these are responsible for producing most of the sweat in the underarm areas. even though the body is constantly producing sweat, there are times when we produce a lot more, like during times of physical exertion, nervousness, stress or heat. When the sweat gland is stimulated, cells secrete a fluid that travels through the gland and out onto the surface of our skin, which helps to cool the body.

Sweat produced in our underarms often has an unpleasant odor. While deodorants mask or deactivate this odor, an antiperspirant attempt to prevent it altogether by blocking the sweat from coming up through the gland and out onto the skin. This is accomplished using several aluminum-based active ingredients such as aluminum chloride, aluminum zirconium tricholorohydrex glycine, aluminum chlorohydrate and aluminum hydroxybromide. Astringents are also used to shrink the pores through which sweat escapes. Put basically, antiperspirants prevent sweat from reaching the skin's surface by clogging our pores.

Today, many people are still uncomfortable with blocking or stopping the body's natural process for cooling itself as well as removing toxins through the skin's surface. Unlike antiperspirants that contain aluminum, natural and aluminum-free deodorants, or otherwise, deodorants in general do not contain properties that clog or close pores. Basically, deodorants do not interfere with sweating; they simply neutralize the odor associated with it.

The way a deodorant works is thsat it will diminish body odor by deactivating the functions of odor-causing bacteria. They don't address the right root cause of odor. Applying daily, or multiple times a day, prevents bacteria from growing in those parts of the body that sweat most profusely such as the underarms, Unlike aluminum-based antiperspirants, deodorants let the body's cooling and circulatory functions carry on unimpeded. The discomfort associated with the odor produced by these functions is minimized, however.

Aluminum-free deodorants have many benefits to their use besides the elimination of multiple chemicals from your daily hygiene routine, such as offering a more natural way to neutralize body odor, prevent stains or marks on clothing and they are often more hypoallergenic than antiperspirants.
