Cognitive Behavoiour Therapy and OCD

When I first started in therapy for my OCD and depression, they started me almost instantly with CBT, or Cognitive Behaviour Therapy which is a psychotherapeutic approach: or a talking therapy. CBT originated out of both, Behaviour therapy and Cognitive Therapy.

Behavior therapy (behaviour modification) is "an approach to psychotherapy based on learning theory which aims to treat psychopathology through techniques designed to reinforce desired and eliminate undesired behaviours." while, Cognitive Therapy (CT) is "a type of psychotherapy developed by American psychiatrist Aaron T. Beck. Cognitive Therapy is one of the therapeutic approaches within the larger group of Cognitive Behavioral Therapies (CBT) and was first expounded by Beck in the 1960s."

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) aims to solve problems concerning dysfunctional emotions, behaviors and cognitions through a goal-oriented, systematic procedure in the present. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is the process of exposing the client to their fears or compulsions, obsessions, or rituals they call this Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP).

SideNote: a quote from wikipedia ERP is defined as "a treatment method available from behavioral psychologists and cognitive-behavioral therapists for a variety of anxiety disorders, especially Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It is an example of an Exposure Therapy."

As a little experiment you can do the following....

First, write a little memo or list of all your OCD or what appears to be OCD symptoms that you have noticed over the last few months or weeks.

Once you have the list, start with the OCD symptom with the least anxiety provoking fear that it gives you or one that you have. This will be a springboard for the other symptoms to ramp up to.

Next, is to challenge these symptoms on a day to day basis and when you meet up with a fear compulsion or ritual meet it head on and and remember your exposure sessions that you had and the headway you have made toward growing away from your OCD symptoms.

As an example we could have,.... a person who repeatedly checks light switches to make sure they're turned off. They would carry out a CBT session program of exposure to their feared stimulus (leaving lights switched on) while refusing to engage in any safety behaviors.

Well there you have it, a look at both CBT and ERP. Both a worked in together to give the OCD sufferer the best possible use out of both techniques. The next time you are in with your therapist ask him/her about CBT and ERP it's worth a try to sdee if it will work in your situation isn't it?
