The Decorative Value of Chess Sets

Chess is an ancient game of competition that pits the minds of two opponents against one another in a contest of skill and strategy designed to measure the cognitive complexity of your opponent. It is a powerful symbol of strength and competitive cunning, and can have a dramatic impact on the nature of a space. Understanding the decorative role of chess sets, can allow you to use it as an important piece in the atmosphere of a room.

The first thing you should notice is the contrasted colors of these sets. Every chess game consists of two opposing colors. The classic look is the white black pattern of the standard checker board; however any two opposing colors can be used. Often it will be a black matched to a contrasting hue such as green or blue, or white arrayed in a similar fashion.

This dichotomy of colors creates dramatic tension within the piece, giving it an inherent power and energy that helps it to stand out even further within a room. Contrasting colors crackle with power, because of the nature of the opposing forces.

Another important decorative factor concerning chess sets is the shape of the men. The standard set will have pieces which are tall and thin with rounded edges, giving the entire piece a sleek and precise look. Others will have sharper edges, giving them a more predatory look. In other cases you will boxy pieces that will be angular and look more modern. You should choose a set that will incorporate into the look and feel of the room it will be placed in.

The size of a chess set will say a lot too. The bigger the pieces the more imposing they will be, while a smaller set will be more mobile. This can have an effect on the perspective of the entire room, and how size is perceived within the space. Smaller sets will go unnoticed often, but can occupy a niche space in the home, allowing you to create gaming stations in various places in your environment.

The style and design of chess sets has evolved over the years. It has been a game of kings and conquerors, and as such it has moved more and more towards an inherent elegance that resides within the simple beauty of the geometrically precise pieces, and the contrasting bold and powerful board. This allows you to add a sense of dynamic energy and power to your home.
