through popular culture. We know this train from books, movies and other sources and we generally associate it with both luxury and mystery. It is a train which has a place in the popular imagination, and this is still definitely a luxurious way to travel through Europe. Luxury train travel has a long history, with George Pullman being one of the first to hit upon the idea of offering luxury travel to passengers with all of the amenities available. By the mid 1800s there were train cars, which featured parlours for relaxing and sleeping berths. In Europe, Georges Nagelmackers began building luxury trains to provide upmarket travellers with comfortable travel by train. The Orient Express first run was from Paris to Giurgiu, Romania, stopping in Strasbourg, Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest along the way. The train quickly acquired a reputation as a luxurious means of reaching the then-exotic (for travellers from Western Europe) destinations of Hungary and Romania. By 1900, the Orient Express was running an extended route travelling all the way to Istanbul via the Simplon Tunnel. The early decades of the 20th Century were good ones for this luxury train; but the beginning of WWII shut down the Orient Express for a time. Following the war, the Orient Express resumed operation but with air travel becoming increasingly common, its days were numbered and the Orient Express made its final Paris to Istanbul run in 1977. However, the Orient Express is now back in operation. Two of the trains carriages were purchased at an auction at Sothebys and 16 million dollars of restoration and further investment in buying the remaining 35 cars of the train later, the Orient Express is in business again. A trip on the Orient Express is an unforgettable experience; you can travel to all of the European cities, which were part of the route from Strasbourg to Vienna, its a one of a kind way to see Europe. While the cities have changed since the old days of this historic route, the train itself provides an experience, which is like stepping back in time. Youll meet your personal steward as you board the train and be taken to your compartment. The meals on board are extraordinary; they are made by some of the finest chefs of France using fresh local ingredients purchased at each stop along the way and you wont lack for ambiance thanks to the three well-appointed dining cars. Youll be able to select a single compartment, a double compartment or even combine two cabins into your own cabin suite complete with private lounge, sleeping compartment and sofa! Sure, you could just continue to daydream about the experience of riding the Orient Express; but now that its something, which you really can enjoy for yourself, theres no reason to! Stop dreaming and start experiencing the Orient Express.
