I'm going to write a series of articles based on the marketing principles found in Mike Dillard's ebook, Magnetic Sponsoring. "Follow The Leader" is often considered to be just a child's game to play but it is really what each of us participates in through out our lives. Even leaders follow leaders. In the winter of 1983, on a long stretch of highway, it happened that I was placed in a life and death situation. The temperature outside was only in the teens and I was driving in a blizzard. A "white out" had occurred because of the blowing and drifting snow. I could no longer see any farm housesand snow drifts soon made the road impassable. I could see that this could end up being really bad. I forced a path through some driftstrying not to think of the 20 miles that lay ahead of me to the next town. After going through a few, I now had a drift in front of me that was impossible, what could I do? I had to stop. Gas tank half full, no water or food, night fall just a couple of hours away and I was wearing inadequate winter clothing. This was bad and I knew it. I softly asked for "help." About three minutes later a massive 4x4 blasted through the drift behind me and pulled along side me. A young fella then yelled out of his open window, Follow Us! An order that didn't need repeating. An hour passed before we reached the next town. Their super sized truck hitting some drifts a couple of times as it struggled to get through. How relieved I was when we rolled into town. I let them know how thankful I was to them and Godand when I pulled into my driveway, I gave my car a pat and thanked it. There are a few analogies I would like to excerpt from my experience. It was reading Magnetic Sponsoring that helped me recognize them. The first thing is the fact that we follow those that can benefit us in our efforts to progress in our lives. When that truck plowed through the drift behind me, I had no doubts about their ability to get me to the next town. When people find you, that's what they trying to find out. Can you take them where they want to go? It naturally follows that a leader must posses the right equipment to get the job done. This is the starting point for all of us. Not having the right equipment will keep us in the position in which we will not be leading but following instead. But when we are the ones with the right "equipment" that's the point at which we will be worth being followed. In the networking business our equipment is gaining the right knowledge, giving the right motivation and going the right direction. How long it takes for you to acquire this equipmentis something only you can determine, but you must decide to own it. Just a word to the wise, do it quickly. The man behind the wheel of that truck knew he had some really bad drifts in front of us but he took them on one at a time. I can still see the snow flying as he hit those drifts. Are you that determined? Have you a specific destination? Are you willing to hit an obstacle in your path and persist to the other side? Do you care about the people that are following you? True leaders have these qualities, it is these qualities that make someone worth following.
