When you start looking for a new bed, the choices can be overwhelming. We hope to give you a few hints that might make those choices a little less stressful, but still allow you to select just the right bed for you and your family. As with any new furniture purchase, your first step is to analyze the amount of space you have. If you dont have as many bedrooms as youd like, then a great alternative is bunk beds. Think bunk beds are just big, unattractive, pieces of useless furniture? If so, youll be surprised at how far the manufacturing and design has come in the past few decades. You can find bunk beds that are works of art, smaller, lighter, and safer than ever before. Even the kids themes can create beautiful play rooms out of a childs bedroom. As a bonus, most designs offer extra storage underneath and at the end of the beds and there is never enough storage space, especially when you have kids.
For the smaller rooms, you may also wish to consider loft beds, which are similar to bunk beds. In a loft-bed setup, the bed is six feet off the floor and allows for plenty of storage or work space below. Futons or day beds are great for the family area or guest room to use as seating during the day and sleeping at night if company stops by.
Just a few specific words about bunk beds: Even before your children start clamoring over who gets to sleep in the top bunk, take a few minutes and go over the safety features of your new bunk beds. Make sure your children understand the concept of guard rails. Demonstrate, if necessary, using one of their favorite stuffed animals, on a lower bunk. Roll Teddy back and forth, and let him fall to the ground. But when Teddy rolls against a guard rail, Teddy is safe. Guardrails must be secured at all times because children (like all of us) move around or roll during their sleep. We also recommend not allowing children under the age of six to sleep in the upper bunk. The access to the upper bunk is also important. Please take a moment to teach your kids how to safely use the ladder of the bed, and explain what the consequences will be to anyone found to not be using the ladder properly. Also, consider installing a fun night light. The extra light provides additional security, both for the child, and for you.
Loft beds are popular in college dorms because they maximize the amount of space available, and, well, they look kind of cool. Space below the loft is used for storage, a desk, or whatever else comes to mind (you know these college students today). Loft beds come in an array of sizes, and you can also find them in many different materials. Although popularized by college students, older adults find them comfortable as well... Make sure the mattress you use with a futon in seven inches or less. You dont have to worry about that with futons. Just pull them out of the box, set them up as they come. They are already extremely comfortable, and come in a variety of styles.
