How to Get Organized Helpful Hints

Would you like to get rid of stuff that is cluttering up your house or apartment, but you may have second thoughts on needing it again?

Here are the top questions asked to professional organizers:

"How do I know what items to get rid of?"

"How do I Make certain I won't need that item again?"

In this article below, I am going to uncover a secret: knowing what to get rid of, keep, and where/how to get going.

Hmm?..what to Get Rid Of?: If it has no meaning or usefulness, get rid of it! But what if I need it in the future? You will never know! The only think you only know that you do not need it right now. This is what you have to believe: one day, you will be able to get that item again just as you were able to get it in the beginning. You must trust the market. If you eventually realize that you do need it in the future, you will be able to simply find a substitute elsewhere such as Craigslist, eBay, Amazon or another of the online free markets available on the Internet.

Example: you have an unused shelf that you decide to sell on Craigslist for $50 and that a year later you find that you really need a shelf. You should have no problem finding one within a week. The good news is usually you will find one that meets your needs better than the original. Also, you have had an additional $50 in your pocket over the past 12 months.

What should I Keep: Hold on to things that have usefulness or are meaningful. If you are the typical one that cannot let personal memorabilia go, try this simple 3 step process.

1. Gather the top 10 items that that you truly value and mean the most.

2. Congratulate yourself by displaying them in a nice fashion somewhere. Frame a special photo, put it up on a wall, or put together a nice box of special jewelry, news clippings, and other tiny items.

3. For all your family members, dig up a single large box. Have each member choose a favorite item to put in the box. Donate or sell the leftover items.

How to Get Started: Prioritize is key. Get all the areas you want organized and start making a list. Start with the area you frequently use the most. In one area:

Start filtering out things that are usually garbage or recycling items. The chances are that you may get distracted, but just concentrate on garbage and recycling items; do not bother with anything else. A tip for focusing: put on some favorite music and have it cleared out before the album ends.

Next, put together 3 large bins in the area you are working at. Things to donate go in one bin, things to be sold in the 2nd bin, and things that belong in a different area go in the final bin. If you need more bins, then do so. When you are finished, remove the bins from your working area.

After you have sorted all of the items, now you can begin to organize. remember: organize only the items you would like to keep. Go over the area a few times if necessary. What purpose should it have? How can you benefit from the space? Can you use the walls to show items and keep them off the ground? Let your answers dictate the process of organizing.
