Decorating Blues Blue Tones in the Home

The color blue is a powerful hue that evokes thoughts of raging oceans, and vast cloudless skies. It is more than a color, it is a symbol written on the subconscious minds of every living being. When using it in the home, its important to be aware of this symbolic importance, both to prevent mistakes, and to help enhance the strategic toolkit at your disposal.

The tone of the blue is very important for determining its decorative meaning. Dark blue and navy colors tend to be quiet, almost brooding tones, which evoke images of contemplation, or extreme relaxation. These tones are good for bedrooms, where you are supposed to sink into the tranquility of slumber each night.

Lighter blue tones tend to evoke feelings of freedom, and may even elicit a sense of exuberance and adventure, if they get into brighter pastel tones. If they mimic sky colors, then there will be a feeling of openness coming from rooms that invoke these tones heavily.

Another issue when using blue comes from the fact that there is very little food in nature that is blue. For some reason plants and animals do not tend to naturally evolve blue tones. There are some exceptions, although most of those are really just shades of violet. The result of this is that people do not tend to think of food when in the context of blue tones. In fact this color can actually inhibit the hunger response in some people.

For this reason blue should generally be left out of kitchen designs. If you are trying to cut back on snacking while you cook you can try introducing a few elements in this color, however you do not want to completely ruin your inspiration for cooking, and so in general these colors should be avoided.

The color blue is generally a very calm and serene tone. In darker hues it is almost brooding, while in lighter shades it tends to have a feeling of freedom and exuberance. However you use it, be sure to pay attention to your own reactions when decorating with these tones.
