Important Carpeting Considerations

When selecting a new carpet for your home, there’s numerous decisions you’ll need to consider. Rugs come in a variety of styles, textures, fibers, and colors, and you’ll want to weigh the pros and cons of each of these factors before deciding on the perfect new carpet for your home.

The rug color or pattern is often the first concern of carpet buyers. Dark carpeting is ideal for homes with pets and small children, as stains can often be concealed by dark carpeting and it doesn’t require as much upkeep in terms of cleaning. Light rugs, however, can often make a room seem larger than it really is and therefore is preferable for decorating smaller spaces. Bold patterns will draw attention to the floor, while a solid light or muted color will most likely draw the eye upward. Carpeting can really influence the whole style of a room, so it is important to truly consider the type of mood you want to create within the room before choosing a rug.

Fabric choice is one of the more important factors for choosing a new home carpet, but many people are confused by or unaware of the different fabric options available when buying a carpet. Wool is a fabric which looks sumptuous and soft and also has outstanding durability. It is one of the few non-man made fabrics available for carpeting. However, it tends to be rather expensive. Acrylic carpeting provides an alternative to wool in terms of feel and durability, but it is artificial. Acrylic carpeting is not designed for high traffic areas. Nylon carpeting, however, is a great choice for high traffic areas as it stands up well to be crushed by feet. Olefin is another man made material, which is inexpensive and easy to clean.

The carpet style should also factor into any carpet purchase. There are two major styles used in the manufacturing of most rugs today: loop pile and cut pile. Loop pile has individual strands of yarn pulled through the backing of the carpet twice, creating a small loop. Loop pile carpet types include berber, sisal, and cable. These rugs usually work well in high traffic areas and tend to hold up their appearance well. Cut pile has the loop cut at the top, leaving tufts of yarn that stand straight up. Many stylish carpet choices such as shag, saxony, and velvet, are made from the cut pile style.

Finally, value, that is the price of the carpet compared to the quality of the product, will also be a factor for most consumers. While you should look for a carpet that fits your budget well, the overall quality of the rug should be considered. A budget priced carpet will not be a bargain if you need to replace it after a short time because the quality was so poor. An investment in a wool carpet, for example, may seem expensive, but considering that wool carpet can last for up to thirty years, the overall value of the product is excellent.

When you take into consideration all of these factors, you’re bound to find the carpet that suits your home perfectly.
