We look back at the events of the last 10 years and see a regression in certain areas. Blanket America, a new charitable organization, does what it can to help. See how you can lend a hand by reading below.
The events of the last several years have certainly left their mark on the American psyche. Since 2000, our country has been through so much change that the America of a decade ago is nearly unrecognizable. I read an article the other day about how much camera, cell phone, and computer technology has changed this decade. Other advances have swept the Americana people off their feet as well. All these technological advances are a boon to our nation. But there are other issues that have changed for the worse in the last 10 years.
New horrors in the world of disease have wrecked havoc in our nation. From mad cow disease crashing beef markets, to avian flu prompting mass bird culls, agricultural markets have take some hard hits in the 00's. While bird flu has been a known killer and threat for years, H1N1, or swine flu has also his us especially hard in the Americas. These new, deadly diseases are costing lives and billions of dollars.
Natural disasters and climate change have been on the forefront of many minds this decade as well. From sunamis to huge earthquakes to toronadoes and hurricanes, it's plain to see something isn't right. Millions upon millions have been displaced by these catastrophic events.
To add to these horrific events, America is fighting two wars, terrorist attacks, economic recession and civil unrest within our borders. We've put up walls to keep people out, strengthened racist ideals, and separated our political parties to the point where we have to be one extreme or another to fit in. it seems that our world is taking a few steps backwards in areas of progress we were behind on to begin with.
On January 20, 2009, Barak Obama tried to urge the people to come together to solve our nations most difficult problems. He gave us a call to action. Blanket America formed its charity in response to that call to action. They have formed a buy one; give one charity to help fight poverty in our nation.
While it is a drop in the bucket when compared to our problems, it is making a big difference in the lives of the poor. Blanket America does have a domestic initiative, but they are extending a helping hand to help those in need in Haiti by donating 80,000 sheets. You can do your part to help by going to www.blanketamerica.com. For every 10 fans on Facebook, Blanket America makes a donation. They also have a Twitter feed where you can keep up to date on the happenings within the charity.
