Design a Contemporary Style Bathroom For Your Home

Bathrooms are no longer the dark, damp, pathogen-infested rooms in a person's home, kept hidden from visitors' eyes as much as possible. Today's bathrooms add plenty of value to the decor of the entire home, and usually receive pretty good attention from visitors. As such, it is necessary to design a bathroom to match the general interior decor of your home. Here are some tips to help you design a contemporary-styled bathroom for your home.

What to have: Bath or Shower?

Make this decision before you proceed any further. Your decor may change considerably, and the budget as well, depending on this decision. A bath is great if you prefer to take long, invigorating baths, but a shower will obviously be a more practical choice. Available space is another criterion to consider, since the shower will practically take negligible space compared to the bath. However, if you can afford both and have been blessed with a large bathroom, then by all means, go for it. That way, you will have the option of taking a quick shower on the busy days, and a long, hot bath on weekends.

What flooring to use?

Installing tiles is certainly better than having one continuous concrete floor, since the latter will likely get more slippery when wet. As for tiles, decide what you want most, affordability, or safety and comfort. Granite or slate will create an impervious cover for your bathroom floor, greatly inhibiting growth of mildew and fungi. However, these will need some amount of care on a regular basis. Besides, the high price tag will certainly have to be considered.

If you are going for affordable, contemporary alternatives, opt for mosaic tiles, or even wood or rubber. Mosaic will provide good traction even when wet, and is definitely a safe option for homes with senior citizens or kids. It's also more affordable than either granite or slate. However, keeping it clean will be a royal pain in the neck, so keep that in mind. If you think you cannot go for any of these options then go for wooden tiles, which will cause less damage if you accidentally fall on these, and will look stylish as well. Rubber tiles will provide the best traction possible, but will dig into your feet, greatly reducing the comfort factor. These will, however, be more economical, and being available in a kaleidoscope worth of colors, will go with any decor.

What type of fixtures to choose?

If you are going for the contemporary look, nothing would look better than chrome fixtures. Install chrome-plated shower heads, faucets, etc., to lend a modern look to the decor of your bathroom. An alternative choice would be to get those plated with gold, but that can really put a good deal of stress on the budget, so think before you splurge.

What color to use on the walls?

Finally, decide on the color scheme of your bathroom. Your choice should be guided by the amount of light the room will get. If the bathroom will receive a lot of natural illumination, go for dark colors to tone down the intensity of light. On the contrary, if the room is in the darker side of the house, opt for whites, peaches, and beige. These will amplify what little light there is, and prevent the gloomy look.

Design your contemporary-styled bathroom with care. Apart from being a joy to the eyes, it will also add substantial value to your home decor.
