Even the most inexperienced of roofers finds that rolled roofing goes on quickly and easily. You probably won't want to use it on the house, but the shed or even a porch roof is a good place to put this type of roofing. In most cases, if the roof doesn't require any other preparation, you can complete the job in a day, two days for bigger jobs. When you put on rolled roofing, you need to prepare the roofing first. It comes in rolls so you need to precut the pieces and allow them to relax. Since this type of roofing cracks below 50 degrees, plan your job for warmer weather. It makes the process easier and the roofing more flexible. Check the roof before you begin. Make certain that you have no nails extruding that could poke holes in your roofing material. All wood that has rotted needs replacement for the roof to be sturdy. Clean the roof thoroughly. This is important. A small rock underneath the roofing can poke a hole through it. While it sounds repetitive, the preparation for the roofing is the most important part of the application. Always install a drip edge before you begin roofing. The drip edge is a metal strip that goes around the edge of the roof and prevents water from destroying the underlying wood on the roofing. Sometimes people call this D-edge. When you apply rolled roofing you need to focus on valleys first. Normally if the valleys are water tight, you won't have leakage in your roof. You'll use a narrower strip of roofing in the valleys first, normally 18 inches, before you cover the rest of the roof. You overlap those pieces with the wider rolled roofing, normally 36 inches wide. Rolled roofing is often more inexpensive than other types of roofing and far easier to apply. It isn't however, the normal choice for an entire home or expensive building. It doesn't have the same attractive appearance as the shingled roof and because it's a single sheet, doesn't supply the multiple layers of protection that the overlapping shingle provides. You need to make certain that the roof has an adequate slope and that you overlap the seams of the roofing also. However, if you simply want to provide a quick and easy solution to roofing your shed or outbuilding or notice that your porch needs a new roof but don't want to spend hours replacing the shingles, rolled roofing is the ideal solution to your problem. There are a number of manufacturers of rolled roofing. Each manufacturer has different specifications for use and different installation instructions. See if the product carries a warranty. If so, you must follow their instruction for the warranty to be in effect. Read all the literature before you select the rolled roofing for your building.
