What to expect from the window installation process

If you live in an older house with sash windows, then you might want to ask whether it might be time to replace them. It is recommended you renovate them if they rattle in the wind or wood appears to have started rotting.

Older sash windows are not as good at reducing the energy costs of your typical home. Due to the fact they are poor insulators, they will let the heat out of your home. Did you know that the typical home loses approximately 15% of its heat because of windows and doorways? Now, in older more classical houses the percentage can climb to as much as 25% because of poorly fitting sash windows and doors.

You should regularly check your sash windows to ensure they fit properly into their frames. If you have double glazed sash windows, your energy could be reduced considerably. By having an extra pane of glass you can ensure heat is retained in your home as it acts as a protective barrier reflecting heat back in. You need to heat your home for you and your family, not the whole neighbourhood.

Make sure if you are going to get your windows replaced, that you get a professional to do it, and you get a proper quote. Which wood will best go with the decor of your home? What is the life span of my new windows? What if goes wrong, will I have adequate protection?

These might seem a bit silly to ask, but not asking might be even sillier if something does happen. How would you feel if your shiny new windows were smashed my a football? What about if you had just put singke pane windows in and you discover you have been conned and doubled paned is a much better option. You are unlikely to get a refund, especially if you havent requested the right information in the first place.

By choosing carefully and sensibly the type of windows you put in your home you make it less likely that they will need replacing for a number of years. You may not even have to replace your sash windows if you have recently purchased your house. Check to see if the windows have been modernized by having a company that specializes in sash windows inspect the property.
