Fireproof doors can make your home safer

There are fire safety measures that every home in Britain has to have by law, such as regularly tested, working smoke alarms. Most people would agree that the legislation that demands smoke alarms is perfectly fair, as your safety, along with the safety of your family, is of paramount importance. However, there is a lot more that you can do in order to protect your home from fire.

That is not to suggest that every home should have an array of fire extinguishers fitted; it is not a terrible idea of course, but it is not necessary. The use of an extinguisher is not to put out a fire, it is to help its wielder to escape a burning building, and as a house is a much smaller property than, say, an office block, it is less likely that you will have to fight your way through to get to an exit. After all, you could probably just go through the window. Many homes already have a fire blanket, even if it is just in the kitchen cupboard, and this could be an inexpensive but effective way of preventing a cooking fire from spreading around your home.

Many work places have fireproof doors fitted; the safety policies of some companies demand it; but they are not only the province of the office. Fireproof doors are becoming much more common in houses, and it is easy to see why. They are generally indistinguishable from normal composite doors, but are obviously great to keep flames at bay, especially when compared to the old wooden panel doors.

Fire proof doors also add all the safety aspects that normal composite doors add, and because they are generally thicker they are also less susceptible to physical attacks from potential intruders attempting to break in. Composite doors cannot be kicked apart with a few swift blows like the older wooden panel doors can, and therefore are a good deterrent for thieves; the experienced burglar will see a composite door on your house and will probably think twice before targeting it, moving on to an easier property. They are also less susceptible to warping or slipping, which means that they will almost never hang off their hinges, and therefore are again more secure against physical attacks. Fireproof UPVC composite doors add an extra dimension to your home in terms of safety, so if you have ageing wooden doors it might be worth looking at how you can improve your security.
