Edit your images online for free with Aviary

While looking for something to fill our Refresh Cartridges blog, we came accross this free online image editor and felt the need to create paper penguins with its help. In case you thought there was a fairly tenuous link, the penguin is the mascot of the company.

Of course, you never know where a journey to create a penguin template will take you and while looking for a free vector image editing program, Matt fortunately stumbled across the website www.aviary.com. Aviary is essentially a free online design suite which consists of many powerful tools ranging from a simple audio editor to a variety of fairly sophisticated image/vector editing software.

The applications are all used online rather than being downloaded and installed on to your hard drive. This makes it incredibly easy to pick up where you left of with a project without having to save it to your hardrive. The fact that everything is stored on a central server means that the most up to date version of the software will always be in use.

Current applications include:

Phoenix - This free image editor handles pretty much anything from basic image retouching to complex effects. Features include a wide selection of tools, support of layers and 72 helpful tutorials to get you up and running.

Toucan - This is a good tool to be used in conjunction with other creation tools within the suite, it allows you to edit colours. Toucan can be used to pick and analyse colour by either colour association rules or by grabbing colours from within existing images.

Peacock - Described by its creators as a 'visual laboratory', Peacock is used to generate a whole host of effects and image manipulation tools to make some quite stunning and abstract artwork.

Raven - This tool is used for generating vector artwork, which is used by artists to create images that are fully scalable and suitable for applications such as logos and t-shirt designs. The intricacies of vector artwork are too deep to explain in one sentence but the bottom line is that rather than every pixel of an image being assigned a colour value, a vector image is saved using descriptions of the lines, curves and shapes making up the image. This means that no loss of quality arises when the image is radically resized. The descriptions of those shapes are changed proportionally making this the case. Due to the restrictions of creating drawings using just shapes and lines, vector images are typically quite simple.

Falcon - This feature allows you to crop, resize and save images and web pages so you can save them for use in another package. A similar utility 'Talon' on the site allows you to do the same with an complete computer screenshot.

Myna - Use Myna to edit and remix music tracks and audio clips. The application can be used to trim, loop, stretch and reverse audio clips along with adding fade ins, fade outs and other effects such as pitch change, delay and reverb. Each of these tools is free to use and comes with at least one tutorial to help newcomers get to grips with how to use the software and what to use each program for. Each program is free to use and advertising is nonexistent, however users do have the option for upgrading for just over £15 a year. By paying for a subscription you are given a number of additional features such as unlimited storage of your creations online, the ability to add personalised watermarks to your creations and access to the advanced premium tutorials and forums.

New Google Docs
Whilst Google Docs has been around for sometime my lack of experience with it has prevented me from covering it in these articles. However when opening our new trade counter in Newton Abbot I found myself creating several spreadsheets to get constantly changing information like store pricing and booked holiday in one place for all my staff. Ever since then I have been solving an increasing amount of issues using my new friend 'Google Docs'. To get started, set up a free Google Account (if you...

Flickr A Great Way to Share Photos
The walls in my lounge are looking very bare and this week I decided it was about time they were brightened up. The idea is to find some high quality, high resolution images of Torbay that can be blown up in size and put on to large canvases. My search has been hindered by the fact that while there are many sites which offer fantastic photographs of Torbay, most the images lack a certain artistic quality and are unavailable in the kind of resolutions that would allow them to be blown up....

CD BurnerXP
We often receive blank DVD discs back that have been marked as being faulty due to the fact the customers machine refuses to write to them. After a little cross examination we almost always arrive at the same conclusion; the machine doesn't actually have any software installed which would allow it to write to DVD hence the difficulties the customer is facing. Such an obvious slip-up is easily understood; Windows XP, an application capable of DVD playback and CD writing must support DVD...

New creation software from Microsoft
It came as a nice surprise this week when I discovered that Microsoft had come up with something new and exciting as opposed to sticking to a tried and tested formula. They do have a bit of a reputation for being a little dull and this week they shook it all up a little. Microsoft have done the unthinkable and have created something exciting. This week we will be looking at Microsoft Photosynth; the technology is still in its early stages but with time, I really think it could be a great...

Cooliris a cool new visually enhancing add on for Firefox and Internet Explorer
There is now a new way to view certain sites online with Firefox and Interent Explorer. Cooliris changes and enhances the way you view certain compatible sites online. The main draw is the impressive way it presents you with an endless wall of images from your chosen page and allows you to browse them by dragging the page and then enlarging the picture/video of your choice. My description does not really do the effect justice, by comparison it is somewhere between Sci-Fi style smart boards...

Desktop Publishing
Back in the day I used to publish an amateur fanzine dedicated to the old school Commodore 64 computer and whilst it wasn't the way most teenagers spend their time it was something I genuinely enjoyed doing. This was a fanzine which enjoyed worldwide, low scale distribution and those who are even slightly interested can still find some information about this 12 year old magazine by looking up 'Zine 64 on Google as some of the articles were voluntarily archived by our readers online. Rather...

Video Editing Software
I often recommend various pieces of free software which I believe my readers may be interested in downloading, however when getting caught up in the process of downloading new and exciting software it is apparently quite easy to overlook something right under your nose. Windows Movie Maker has been bundled with Windows ever since the dreadful Windows ME (Millennium Edition), and whilst the earlier versions suffered from a woefully inadequate feature set, the later editions have actually been...

Deepburner
Last week I felt the need to burn some information on to DVD and having just recently formatted my hard drive and installed Vista I found that I didn't have any recording software apart from the fairly basic functionality built in to Windows. Thinking this wasn't a problem I headed to the Ahead website (www.ahead.de) to obtain the latest version of the popular CD/DVD burning software Nero only to be greeted with a fairly hefty 190mb download. I do have a fairly fast connection so such a...

Microsoft Office 2010
I find it very difficult to get excited about a new edition of the Microsoft Office suite as by their very nature, they are designed to do very mundane day to day tasks. With the final release due in a couple of months, Microsoft have provided a beta test version of Office 2010 that's free for members of the public to download. The beta test version will run unhindered until October 2010 at which point users must decide whether they wish to purchase the final release or have it removed from...

Blogging Advice
When redesigning the www.computerarticles.co.uk website this week, I came across a far simpler way of doing so rather than creating a whole new interface. You can use free blogging software to create a blog website. Wordpress allows you to create such a website. A blog is a website maintained by an individual or company where a series of regular entries are made relating to a specific subject matter, such as a personal diary or an opinions page. In the past I have covered the free website...
