Operating Systems
It takes a true geek to successfully engage in a deep conversation about technological advances that were released 5 years before his birth. More specifically it was a discussion of old CP/M between myself and a colleague that prompted the recognition of this.
The trip down memory lane got me thinking that perhaps it would be nice to remind ourselves of the path we have walked to have become unfortunate enough to end up with Windows as the most popular choice of Operating System.
CP/M -...
Web OS
It was suggested to me this week that perhaps I should do an article on the fairly recent developments in the field of web Operating Systems although I'll be honest that I started out not really understanding the point of such a concept and even after researching this article I'm afraid to say that I still don't.
A WebOS is a virtual Operating System that runs in your web browser. The term 'Operating System' is a little misleading as a WebOS is in fact a set of applications running in your...
New Windows operating system
Windows 7 is released on Thursday, but one statistic that caught my attention was in a Wikipedia article, which says that there are estimated to be three times as many XP computers in use today than Vista ones. This would indicate that XP is not the dinosaur that the marketing people would have us believe. I've still running XP on two desktops with no complaints, even though they are getting on a bit.
It also leads to questions about how popular Vista was with the general public and business...
Windows 7 the new Operating System from Microsoft
I'm confused. I'm sure Microsoft are doing this on purpose.
The approach for naming Windows appears to change with every release. Back when I first started using Windows we were running 3.11 which we then upgraded to Windows 95 (although NT 4.0 was also available). Next we switched to Windows Millennium Edition (although a rather similarly sounding Windows 2000 was available) then we moved on to versions named after aspirational monikers such as XP and Vista.
It seems confusing as to whether...
WindowsCare Automated System Repair
I used to repair peoples computer as my bread and butter job, you as such you should be able to appreciate how cautious I am when it comes to people mending their own PCs when the inevitable happens; if it is a serious matter I would suggest always calling a specialist. I find that generally someone with a little knowhow can be hazardous to the machines health especially when trying to fix an Operating System!
That having been said, I do certainly see the need for applications that can...
Google Presents Google Chrome OS
? Here at Refresh we were excited to hear Google are planning to release their own operating system late 2010.
Initially targeted at Netbooks (incredibly small laptops with relatively low specifications), Google Chrome OS will be a lightweight, open source alternative to Windows. It will be designed primarily for online use, with the entire OS essentially consisting of the Google Chrome browser running on a Linux backend.
The idea being that in the future developers will produce web based...
Windows Vista Part I
A couple of people recently have mentioned to me recently that I'm yet to review Windows Vista in follow up to the feature that I did regarding the beta (test) edition last year. This isn't an oversight on my part but something I did intentionally as a true review of an Operating System requires the writer to use it day in day out for an extended period before giving his opinion. I've now been using Windows Vista since its launch date at the beginning of the year so I've now had a couple of...
Windows Vista Part II
Last week I talked to you about Microsoft's new Operating System 'Windows Vista' and discussed the functionality updates that have been introduced and how they could possibly benefit you.
As half the measure of a good Operating System is determined by its applications I think we now need to focus on this particular aspect of Vista. I promised last week that we would look in to the bundled applications and as I see it the below points highlight the most significant developments in this...
Vista Pack One
This week Microsoft made the eagerly awaiting Windows Vista Service Pack 1 available for general download. Service Packs are important milestones in the development of an Operating System as they bring together a collection of bug fixes, performance improvements, security updates and new product features. For many the release of the first service pack is the only time they will consider updating their Operating System, the idea being that all the potential teething problems are now ironed out....
64Bit Computing
There is a lot of talk about Windows Vista both online and in my store at the moment as well as a considerable amount of paranoia that is preventing users from taking the leap onto Microsoft's latest Operating System. It surprises me how many people I know who are willing to deliberately pay more for a computer that comes with Windows XP installed just because of some tale they hear d from a friend of a friend of a friend.
If I can just clarify to my readership that Windows Vista is a good...
