Mamma com A Great Alternative To Google And Yahoo

Mamma.com: A Great Alternative To Google And Yahoo!   by Dean Phillips

In keeping with a promise I made to my readers, here's
another great alternative to Google and Yahoo!: Say hello to
Mamma.com!

Mamma.com is a metasearch search engine. A metasearch search
engine actually compiles search results from a variety of
sources. When you enter a query at Mamma.com, you actually
submit your query to the top search engines on the Internet,
and then merge the results eliminating any duplicates.

It searches Google, Business.com, Findwhat, About,
LookSmart, MSN, Open Directory, plus other leading search
engines.

Mamma.com has a great power search page where users can
choose the sources that they query. Since Mamma organizes
between index, directory and pay-per-click, users can tailor
the search engines to match the type of information they
require.

Mamma also have a great tool in its services and tools
section that is called the Mamma explorer bar--click now,
surf later. This lets users (who have downloaded the
product) drag and drop search results into a window and
save their search results for later viewing (or even just to
make sure they don't lose track of the result). If you have
ever done a search and come away with 10 open windows, you
can easily imagine how useful this tool is for research.

Mamma has a great ranking algorithm--applied to all pages
returned. This gives back results that are both commercial
in content and resourceful in terms of educating the user.
Mamma also applies attribution to the search results--by
default--sorting by relevance--not by source. On some other
metasearch search engines, you have to go to the second page
and do an extra click to get your results sorted by
relevance. This is not optimal, since not one index is
superior to the other, and sorting by Google first, may not
always give the users the best result first.

In addition, Mamma.com supports white and yellow page look-
ups, and has a great picture search functionality.

Here's an interesting note: According to Mamma.com, Mark
Cuban, star of the reality television show, "The
Benefactor," and owner of the Dallas Mavericks) invested in
Mamma.com in March, because he liked the picture search
functionality so much.

•Google s Trap DMOZ s Nap And Yahoo s Crap
by Dean PhillipsOn November 16th, 2003, Google commenced an update (the Florida update) which had a catastrophic effect for a very large number of websites and, in the process, turned search engine optimization upside down. It is common to give alphabetical names to Google's updates in the very same way that names are given to hurricanes, and this one became known as Florida. In a nutshell, a vast number of pages, many of which had ranked at or near the top of the results for a very long...

And that's saying a lot because, I've written close to forty articles. Most of the e-mails are very supportive and appreciate of the fact that I'm going after Google and the other large search engines, by telling it like it is.Now even though I appreciate your e-mails and support, I need to make one thing...

by Dean PhillipsIn the fall of 1990, the musical group Snap had a monster number one hit record called, I've Got The Power.Nowadays, a search engine and a directory (AKA) Google and Yahoo!--number one and number two respectively, have the power, and we handed it to them on a silver platter. The aforementioned search engine and directory are the two biggest players in the multi billion dollar pay-for-search industry. Our stubborn and foolish reliance on search engines have helped to open up a...

•Search com The Best Kept Secret On The Internet
by Dean PhillipsA Dean Phillips fan (her words, not mine) wrote me an e-mail asking, if I hate Google, DMOZ and Yahoo! so much, why don't I recommend an alternative search engine? I had to laugh, because I've been receiving a lot of those types of e-mails lately. However, to set the record straight, I don't hate Google, DMOZ and Yahoo!. I really don't. Hate is such a ridiculous waste of energy. I do have problems with the way they conduct business--but hate them, no. My articles are merely...

?   by Dean PhillipsThe fairy tale existance of Google is starting to experience shockwaves. So, what's the source of these shockwaves? Click fraud. As my readers know, I've written several articles on the subject of click fraud, suggesting that since it's the market leader, Google should take a more proactive approach with the problem of click fraud.Until now, Google has been mostly quiet about the subject, issuing this single statement to the Securities and Exchange Commission: We are exposed...

by Dean Phillips A dollar and a dream, is all you need said the television commercial. The lure of the Lottery is a seductive one: plunk down a dollar and you might become a millionaire for life.
