If you like to party, do you know your limitations? How do you know when you've taken things too far, and have had too much to drink? If you often wake up regretting your actions, or can't remember what you did last night, you probably had too much to drink. Enjoy the festivities, but be careful not to indulge. Even if you've had too much to drink, never drink and drive. Each year, a staggering number of people end up dead as a result of alcohol related car accidents.
While you're in the moment, it can be difficult to tell just how drunk you are. Too many people arrested on suspicion of DUI believed that they were good to drive, and that they hadn't had enough to hit the legal limit for drinking and driving. Many people seem to think that they can control a vehicle, even if they've had entirely too much to drink. The more drinks you've had, the more your judgment will be impaired; this will not only render you incapable of driving safely, but it will also render you incapable of realizing this fact, which can create a deadly cycle of ignorance.
Even if you have not hit the legal limit of .08, you can still be arrested for driving while impaired. Don't take the chance of driving even after just one or two drinks, or you may find yourself in the situation of having to explain to the police officer how much you've had to drink; avoid having to hire a DUI lawyer by avoiding driving after you've been drinking, no matter how many drinks you've had. Even in small quantities, alcohol and driving don't mix. The consequences associated with driving under the influence are simply not worth the risk - a small cab far will always be cheaper than steep fines and other consequences associated with a DUI conviction.
Even if you don't plan to drink very much, have a plan for transportation. Carry cab fare and the dispatcher's number, arrange a designated driver, or plan to spend the night to avoid driving home. Don't wait until you're already impaired by alcohol to make a transportation plan, or you risk making the stupid decision to drink and drive. There is not a single reason why drinking and driving will ever be a reasonable idea. Leave your keys at home if you think you might be tempted to drive home after a drink or give them to a friend once you arrive so that the possibility to make a bad decision is erased. Drinking and driving should never be an option.
Choosing to drink and drive can cause permanent consequences. According to one study, over a third of all traffic-related fatalities are caused by drunk drivers. Not only are you in danger of injuring or killing yourself or others if you're on the road while drunk, but a DUI conviction can carry heavy penalties, including fines and jail time. A DUI will hinder your ability to qualify for jobs, and you may even lose your driver's license. Avoiding a DUI conviction can require a lengthy court case and the help of a skilled DUI lawyer. Is getting behind the wheel of a car worth the risk of getting arrested for a DUI? Obviously, the answer is a resounding "NO!"
