Trade Show Giveaways A Great Way to Bring in Traffic and Gain New Customers



There is something about getting free stuff. We don’t know what it is but for some reason everyone loves to get something for free. It can be something as simple as a cup of coffee from a friend or even looking back at the times we used to get that treat from a friend’s lunch in elementary school that they did not want. For some reason or another a free gift really makes us happy.

Look how crazy people get at sporting events, like football games, when there are promotional workers at the game shooting hot dogs and t-shirts out of pressured cannons. Or when these same event workers throw mini footballs or other prizes into the crowd, people literally lose their minds. Screaming for the promotional reps to shoot or throw the prize into their area. I have witnessed grown men and women basically snatch some two-dollar prize out of a small child’s hand. It is really sick when you think about it. Especially when it is over something you could probably get at the dollar store. Well, for whatever psychological reason we love a free gift or prize. It makes our day, no matter how crappy or in-expensive the item is. However, we are even more excited when the “free” giveaway is something practical or cool.

When it comes to giveaways there is one place that you are sure to find enough to go around for everyone. A place where they definitely take advantage of people’s inherit need to get these free items. And to use this drive to get people to learn about a company itself or a product or service that a company offers. Of course I am talking about tradeshows and the tradeshow giveaways that accompany these large promotional events.

Believe it or not tradeshow giveaways can have a huge impact on attendees to the event. I have been lucky enough to experience this from both sides of the coin. As both part of an exhibiting team at a couple of Canada’s biggest tradeshows and also having attended a couple as a visitor I have had the experience of both giving away promotional materials and also receiving these free giveaways from other exhibits. And I must admit when I was an attendee, years before I was on the exhibiting end, I did not realize how those great little promotional items really played a huge role in the marketing world. For example, I remember receiving a couple of really cool items such as a pen that lit up and was magnetic. I used to always use this pen and show it to people and when I did there was the company’s name and website on the pen who gave it to me. So not only was I re-affirming the company’s logo and name with myself but I was also promoting and marketing the company to my co-workers, friends, family, and others who I was showing this giveaway item to all of the time.

Once I stepped into the exhibiting mode of the tradeshow world I remembered this pen and a couple of really cool items I had received as free giveaways and I realized that as exhibitors we would need to use some great promotional items to in order to market our company, build brand identity, and to create a little buzz and spark in tradeshow visitors so they would want to visit our booth and talk about our company/products.

However, as you get more into the technical side of the tradeshow world you realize that giveaways even have more to them than simply giving something away. Here are 2 easy to follow tips that you should apply to your giveaway promotional item you use at your next tradeshow.

1. Your giveaways should be much more than a novelty item; they should support your main product you are focusing on at the show or your overall marketing message for the show. An example would be if you’re company is a pharmaceutical company to perhaps provide a small sample of one of your company’s top products. Or if you are a computer company you should provide a flash card with your company’s name and website posted on them.

2. Make sure your giveaway has some practical value. Obviously a miniature Hulk Hogan doll or a flying airplane is going to be a promotional item that will certainly attract some attention. However, the actual value they offer visitors to your booth is going to be minimal. Most likely they will be thrown out or given away to a child after the event. By investing in a giveaway that has some real practical value such as a desk calendar, cool pen, water bottle, or even a calculator, which you can stamp your company’s logo, name, and even website on, will do a much better job of promoting your company long after the show.
