Top Reasons Why You Should Take a Yeast Infection Test

You think you may have a yeast infection, but are not sure, so what do you do about it? There are many tests that you can take, but the first step is always the same - see a doctor.

When you see your doctor, he will enquire about your symptoms, how long have you had them for and any medications you are currently using in an attempt to relieve these symptoms. You would be well advised to be honest and open with your doctor, especially if this isn't the first time you have had this problem.

The first, and most basic test the doctor will want to perform is the taking of a sample. You will then need to wait for the results to be received. Your doctor has a choice of two basic tests. First, there is the vaginal culture test. This is usually taken during a wet mount test. If this shows a higher than normal amount of yeast is present, then you have a yeast infection. A blood test is the second test the doctor will perform. This is owing to the fact that a yeast infection can be caused by diabetes or other health related problems.

The doctor may also wish to check for dryness or white plaques on the vaginal wall by conducting a pelvic examination.

If the tests conducted are positive the doctor will decide what form of treatment should be used. If this is the first occurence he may prescribe something which will cure the problem in around a week or so, but if it has happened before then he may tell you to try creams, suppositories or tablets.

Medical studies have shown that having a yeast infection may make you more susceptible to contracting HIV. This is because vaginal irritation could permit the passage of the virus into the bloodstream. Although this is quite a rare occurence, you should be aware of the problem and talk to your doctor about it.

There are some natural home remedies that some people have used effectively. These include cranberry juice, yoghurt, curds, vinegar, olive leaf and grape fruit extract.

While you are being treated for a yeast infection it is inadvisable to engage in any form of sexual contact. Even if a condom is used, it is still possible to transmit the infection as the creams attack the latex in the condom.

The best way for a doctor to diagnose your condition is to take a yeast infection test. You may consider this to be unnecessary, but your doctor has to follow certain procedures in order to recommend the most appropriate treatment for you.
