My topic blindness, holds immense importance. We all come across blind people in our lives, sometimes on roads as beggars, or sometimes as our own family members or relatives. Some people are born blind and in that it is not their fault. We cannot always blame them that they've become blind by watching television too closely or by reading too many books. The people who are blind and cannot afford to have those eye operations should be helped by people like us who are fortunate and privileged.
Imagine yourself being locked in a dark room for hours, how would you feel? The darkness would seem to be swallowing you and the walls would seem to be closing in on you. Yet we are so indifferent. If a blind person is crossing the road and had no one to help him and is having a lot of difficulty, then we would never come out of the car and help him. It's the lack of time that we remark. But my dad is not one of those. He cares enough to work voluntary for these blind people. He organizes eye camps where people can get their eyes checked and get the necessary medicines. These eye camps are for everyone, and are set up on different places in Pakistan every three to four months for a week. The question is of helping these people in whichever way possible. It doesn't necessarily have to be financial. We can help by: Letting them know that they are loved no matter what their predicament is a disease, not a handicap and certainly not their fault. We should be tolerant of their behaviour, no matter how violent it is, for it maybe the only way of expressing their grief. We should be receptive to their demands, feelings and opinions.
Many blind people thwart to their disease and commit suicide. It is the most heinous crime both religiously and morally. Globally, at least 4 million people attempt suicide out of which 25% are blind. This maybe due to depression or other mental disorders. Hence, such people should not be treated crudely or with cruelly. They should be sympathized with, or rather, should be treated as normal people.
At the end, I would just like to say that we should be thankful to God for giving us a pair of perfectly functioning eyes along with other senses and blessings. Hence, we should be content with what little we have and not crave for more than we already have!
