The abdominal cavity is protected and supported by four main muscle groups. These are the muscles that help you to exhale, cough, defecate, give birth and much more. The abdominal muscle protects your internal organs and supports your back. This abdominal muscle group is made up of Rectus Abdominis, External Oblique, Internal Oblique, and the Transversus Abdominis, and they are located at the front and side of the abdomen. When this abdominal muscle group is well maintained by regular exercise the results are, a lean hard stomach, the appearance of what we call six pack abs, the proper support of the skeletal frame by stabilizing the vertebral column. When this abdominal muscle group is neglected by lack of exercise and over eating, the results are usually a flabby middle or worse a pot belly. In order to get your abdominal muscle back in shape, its important that one begins a proper diet along with regular exercises to strengthen and tone the abdominal muscle. This of course will greatly benefit your overall appearance, and will go far in your overall well being. Care should be taken when you decide to start a regimen of diet and exercise to improve your abdominal muscle, some exercises may actually lead to lower back pain, and will do little to strengthen the abdominals and give you that appearance that youre looking for. Question that comes to mind is: If I start doing sit ups will it help? In a study by researchers at the University of Massachusetts, it was conclusively shown that sit-up exercise training does not decrease the diameter of abdominal adipose cells, or abdominal circumference (Katch et al., 1984) So, you cannot decrease abdominal fat simply by exercise. If you want to strengthen your abdominal muscle, you must reduce your fat (food) intake. What can one do to get that flat hard abdominal muscle appearance? Exercise them on a daily base. There no need to rest these muscles, unlike major muscle groups. The abdominal muscle is thin and very rarely gets fatigued, so there is really no need to worry about over working the abs. Variety is a big part of working with your abdominal muscle. If you simply do sit ups and crunches on a daily base, your body will quickly adopt to it, and you will not see the results in your abdominal muscle. Keep it interesting by stimulating and challenging different parts of your abdominal muscles. Nutrition and diet are key in seeing results when it comes to exercising your abdominal muscle group. To get you started on the proper nutrition in your quest to strengthen your abdominal muscle, theres a free guide that you are welcomed to have on Training and Nutrition for a lean body by Mike Geary. Dont neglect your abdominal muscle. Get them back in shape and they will reward you with a lifetime of good health and Good Looks!!
