Getting to Know the Golden Retriever Breed of Dog

For some reason the Golden Retriever breed of dog act as some kind of magnet to aspiring pet owners. They have been the pet breed of choice for home owners, as show dogs, as hunting dogs and even as guidance dogs for the blind. Their versatility and ability to train and obey have made the Golden Retriever the dog of choice for pet owners who do not wish to take any chances.

Retrievers are relatively quiet, great with children and behave themselves most of the time. They are smart dogs, not at all difficult to train, which makes for a wonderful companion. There are known for their loyalty, and devotion to home and family. Retrievers will also do their part when it comes to guarding your home, and show a defensive posture whenever a stranger is near. It seems to be part of their instinctive nature to guard the home where they live in without having received any training whatsoever as a guard dog.

Regardless of the amount of time you spend brushing your dog, he will shed his hair during most of the year, especially in the spring. They are inclined to play around water and soak themselves in it very often. This practice may prove frustrating for some pet owners, as retrievers won’t think twice about rolling around in the mud. Playing dog games around the house and looking for a puddle to soak themselves in is all part of their nature.

People who live on the road and are randomly at home should not consider themselves candidates for a Golden Retriever. Also, if you are inclined to prefer cats over dogs, this is also a sign should look for another breed of dog. Unlike cats, and some other breeds, retrievers don’t seem to ever get enough attention by their owners. They will grow unhappy and permanently sad if there are left at home alone. Retrievers are family dogs, which love to share and interact with others around him, and have an insatiable need for attention.

Most people thinking about getting a dog prefer a puppy. This way the animal will get to know everyone at home, and also get a chance to learn everything you wish to teach him. This is a great idea for those who have the patience and wish to take on this project head on. If you feel you lack the time to dedicate to your dog, perhaps you should think about getting an older dog, which has been house broken and trained.

Overall, Golden Retrievers make great companions and family members will love him. They are the kind of animal you can take for a walk, out camping, or let loose to play dog games with the children. They are more comfortable outdoors and surrounded by people, never to be left inside a home alone for long periods of time. Once your retriever gets to know all members of your family, he will turn into a loveable companion you will never want to leave behind.
