Preparing Your Golden Retriever For Life at Home

One of the key factors in house training your Golden Retriever is to make sure the dog learns to associate his place in the house to his crate, spending less time anywhere else. You should closely monitor his activity whenever he is outside the crate. The key to your success is to observe your dog closely for every move outside the crate, any undesirable activity which occurs outside, must be corrected immediately.

Once you have spotted your dog attempting to relief himself in the incorrect location, quickly pick him up and take him where he should perform his potty. Make sure you take him there enough times that he becomes aware of the message you are trying to convey. Be patient in this learning process, and provide enough praise to keep him going and motivated. If you follow your dog’s activity, and correct him every time he needs, you shouldn’t have any problems house breaking your Golden Retriever. On the other hand, if you dismiss the accidents that occur without correction, these are likely to become a pattern and very difficult to fix at a later point in time.

As part of your efforts in preparing your dog for life at home, you should limit the freedom he gets. Doing the right thing and going where he is supposed to go is not very high in his list of priorities. Giving your dog a long leash, and allowing him to be himself more often than not, will yield negative consequences in the long run when trying to train him. You must make an effort at an early stage, perhaps when your dog first arrives at home as a puppy. House training at this point is as important as playing dog games with him.

Confinement can also be an important tool when house breaking your dog. The use of confinement will give you some space until your dog has been trained and is able to move freely around the home. As time goes by and he starts spending more time outside the crate, always remember to follow his every move, which is crucial to the success of your training.

When house training your Golden Retriever it is important to select a location where you will teach your dog to go and do the potty. One of the best locations is just allowing him to go outside. Going outside the house will provide less mess, and allow the dog to use the potty whenever he likes without disturbing anyone. One of the best tools for this job is the use of a dog door, which can easily be installed in your existing door.

House training your retriever may not be all the dog games you had imagined when you first got him. But you will surely be very satisfied once the training is completed and you keep a trained dog at home, as opposed to a messy, untrained dog. Nothing beats the satisfaction of a pet owner observing his trained dog do the potty where he is supposed to do it.
